I wouldn't buy a Yi camera as a dashcam. I have a Yi Lite that's about £80-100 for comparison.

I have some regrets. The camera has a loop mode, but it doesn't work like normal loop mode. It doesn't over record any previous sessions, it just over-records within a single session. You set the length of the loop, and then it pre-reserves all that space... and if it can't, it won't start recording! This means that a lot of the time you get an error that there's no free space on your SD card... which was the problem I was trying to solve with loop mode, and using it actually makes things worse!

Also, as noted above, 4K is worthless, forget the low FPS, the amount of noise is incredible. picture quality is worse than 1080p. It's not always just about pixels.

And the reviews on Amazon aren't to be trusted.

Having said all that, it'll be no worse than competition around the same price.

All biased reviews
Can't see a specific case for it, and it doesn't appear to have a tripod mount. Am I missing something??

This hasn't really got a usable frame rate at 4k being only 20fps. 1080p/60 is good though

Haven't checked for definite but this will probably have a different processing chip that'll record at a lower bit-rate
How does this compare to the other yi products normally used as a dash cam? Wondering if for the price it will work ok for that

Having read the feedback here I won't be buying two of these to replace G1W dashcams, although I was tempted.

This reads as a great toy of a kid to play with and be introduced to, but nothing more. Heat addded.

There are a couple of limitations with my (genuine) G1W's I want to see improvements on
i) When cars close at >50mph image blur makes it hit and miss whether you can clearly read registration plates. 60fps would go a long way to improving this.
ii) detail drops right off when a vehicle is 10m away. 4k would do a lot here, but only if the bit rate increases proportionately or a lot of progress is made with .265. Either way a really good chip is needed. Or....a basic 2x optical zoom for straight ahead, although this would reduce filed of view a heck of a lot.
Don't by this action camera until you've watched this video.

It has many issues and isn't even sold by Yi themselves on Amazon. It's a repackaged old action camera in a Yi body.
Pity. Will wait for a Yi Lite offer. This isn’t going to cut the mustard.

Have now read many of comments left on Amazon which led me to feeling suspicious.
What's the difference between this and a Yi Lite?

Update, answering my own question:

To be fair, you bought an action camera. Yi do a dash cam that does loop recording etc as you describe.

However if you want to use the Yi lite as a dash cam, I'd suggest clearing the sd card, changing the start cam mode option to 'start as previous', then setting the loop function to max. That should just leave it using the whole card on loop.
Can this just be used as a camera ? Or is it specifically a dash cam? I wanted to buy a camera for my grandson that was cheap but robust

This is a camera, not a dash cam.

Will be great for kids this, I picked up the Yi 4k last week on a lightning deal. Great reviews all round
How i can get this deal? Its 42.99 on amazon...
Why has this been expired? It is still £35.99 which is a steal. I ordered at 42.99 and (though hasn't arrived yet) will be requesting a refund of the difference.
