78% on metacritic. Seems like another great throwback style platformer:

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a brand-new platform adventure from some of the key creative talent behind ‘Donkey Kong Country’.

2.5D Platforming! Each level offers beautiful, rich visuals with detail and depth.

3D Overworld! The overworld isn’t just a hub to hop from level to level, it provides a whole separate gaming experience!

Alternate Level States! Think you’ve got a level figured out? Try it in its alternate state! Hook up electricity, submerge them in water, freeze or literally flip them upside down for radically altered challenges!

Bee-at the Impossible Lair! Players are free to tackle Capital B’s Impossible Lair at any time
however, they may find it too much of a challenge without the help of the Royal Beetallion.

Looks like a fun 2d platformer this, something I feel we need a lot more of!

I may be in the minority but I really couldn't get on with this game, while I also thoroughly enjoyed the first.

Maybe I'm burned out on 2d side scrollers (so many indie games) but it just didn't click to me, felt pretty clunky and s downgrade from full 3d "banjo kazooiee Ness"

Don't get me wrong it has great reviews! And most people seem to love it, just expressing my dislike somewhere
Absolutely love this, surprised how much I'm enjoying it. If you are on the fence, it's definitely worth a go! Quite similar to donkey kong country

DKC yes, but Banjo-Kazooie is a 3D platformer so it's not really a good comparison.

Yeah that's a good point..I'll edit it out.
Really pleasantly surprised by this. I was ready to sleep on it before the reviews started rolling in and, having almost finished it, I can say that it's definitely worth it at this price if you have even a passing interest in 2D platformers.

The Donkey Kong Country comparisons are spot on, but I think there's enough here to differentiate it.

i felt the exact opposite lol, i think you are in the minority yes. Much more responsive controls, as a donkey kong tropical freeze inspired game should be. This yooka is a better dk game, than the first yooka was a banjo kazooie one, also the reviews have been great....

As I said in my second comment
I'm enjoying this a lot. Love that the overworld is basically its own separate game

How is the difficulty? Is it as hard as Donkey Kong? I know the final level is meant to be balls hard but what about the rest of it?

For me, the hard part of DKTF was the awful boss fights. The only boss in YL:TIL is the final boss, so in that regard it is significantly easier.

In terms of levels themselves, I've only got frustrated with one level of the ~35 I've played - which is far, far fewer than I had with DKTF.

Also, there's a feature that lets you skip a section if you die too many times on that particular section. In that regard, the game can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be, I suppose.

Basically, it's solved a good number of complaints you could level at DKCR or DKTF. It's really, really good. If you liked the DK games then this will be a great addition to them - and it's dirt cheap, too.

It's tricky but not frustrating. Finishing the levels is straightforward enough but each one has these 5 gold coins which are optional, you don't have to get them all to open up every area. Some of those are very tricky to get, but it's more for the completionists/masochists.

Every main level you finish, you get a Bee, and that forms part of a shield around you which protects you in the final level. There's 48 available in the game, so you would be able to get hit 48 times before dying on the last level.
It's quite clever really, I've never played a game set up in that way (apart from Mass Effect 2 perhaps!)
So annoyed! I clicked and ordered without thinking and got the PS4 version instead of the switch

only realised when when they sent me the notice it had been processed and dispatched

now switch price is up and returns too expensive ug

It's only a £1 increase in price, so not a huge loss if you were to rebuy. I don't suppose that you paid with PayPal? If you did, they have a returns postage refund scheme that you can opt into.
Nah it’s like 25 on Switch now and when I click the returns for the PS4 version that I paid 21 (including postage) the returns page says cost was £14.

i didn’t use paypal

basically I’m screwed. I’ve emailed them but I think I’ll just have to trade it in. (Easier at this stage)

If you're looking at, say, CeX, they'll only give £13 (cash), so you'd still be better returning. Base will refund what you paid - the £14 will likely be an error somewhere.

Ok I’ll return it when it comes. Thanks for the advice

Ah, it's not yet arrived? In that case, if you're there when the post arrives, just refuse the package - it should then be returned to sender at no additional cost to you.

I’m in Ireland and the postal system doesn’t cater for that so I’ll have to repack and return personally. I’ll live.

I’ve ordered it on Switch now
