Cheers op

High Grade Plastic Spinlocks
The spinlock collars are made from high grade plastic, ensuring a smooth movement along the spinlock bar to safely lock the plates in place.
Once tightened, the plates are held firmly, which prevents rattling and ensures a safe and enjoyable workout. While providing a secure fit, the collars are easy to remove when adjusting the dumbbell weight.

Cast Iron Plates
A range of twelve 1” Standard Cast Iron plates are provided in the set.
You can vary the workout resistance by adding or reducing weight plates on the dumbbell bars to the required level.
Additional York Fitness weight plates can be purchased separately.

Knurling Grip
The knurling in the centre of each spinlock bar is fixed in a central position, ensuring that you will enjoy a functional hand position every set.
The knurling is designed to prevent slippage and provides a comfortable grip when you are using your York Fitness Dumbbells.

Lat Raises
Use your York Fitness Cast Iron 20kg Dumbbells to strengthen your shoulders and upper back muscles.
To perform a Lateral Raise, maintain a straight back, tense your core, and then slowly lift the weights out to the side until your arms are parallel with the floor, with the elbow slightly bent before completing your desired repetitions.

I bought a set of these back in 1993/4 which were fairly well used by me as a beginner before joining a 'gym' which was a disused farm outbuilding full of old kit.

They'd been in my parent's garage for many years, then had a resurrection during lock downs when you couldn't buy kit for love nor money.

I can attest they last and definitely got my money's worth out of them. (edited)

Good set, these. I would invest in a four metal locks to replace the placcy ones, only a few quid on Amazon.
    Tryp's avatar
Agreed, they do the job but this same set used to be shipped with metal locks with rubber stops.

What makes this a good deal over this that's £5 cheaper and includes a middle attach bar with metal locks?

Can anyone tell me where to get cheap metal spin lock collars? I’ve looked on eBay but they all seem to be plastic!? Thanks in advance.

Depends on your definition of cheap, these MiraFit ones are £5.95: mirafit.co.uk/mir…tml

    Is this 2x 20kg

Looking at the second picture it seems to be just 20kgs in total. You can put more than 10kgs on one dumbbell but there seems to be 20kgs of plates in total in the kit. (edited)

Any one know of a simple One coat paint for the plates? mine have lost Colour over the years and could do with a spruce up.

Hammerite or a cheap equivalent will make these look like premium weights.

I had these along with the curling z bar and the bigger barbell. They were a great set. The one negative thing about them IMO, is the spin lock system. It never was 100% tight and compared to the collar system, was very fiddly.

But overall these are amazing if you’re trying to save the £30 odd a month on gym fees etc.

I'm 32 and never thought I'd say this, this early in my life.

Back in my day a KG of free weights was £1/KG.

It's just one tiny thing in a bigger picture but 100% inflation in 15 years on something that costs less to make.... And boomers still think this Gen can't afford anything because of avocado on toast.

Back in my day a KG of free weights was £1/KG.

Including delivery of a 20kg package?

Looking at eBay you can't really even beat this price second hand, almost all collection only and would have cost more than this to your door.

The price history for this listing happens to go all the way back to 2010 where they were £26.99. Using the Bank Of England's inflation calculator for Goods & Services you'd expect them to cost around £37 if nothing else changed.

I bought these in 1966 for 10 shillings, this is some inflation lol /s

Never mind time travelling and getting bitcoins, weights then sell in pandemic for 7 quid a kg

I remember buying this exact set in 2009, still got them. Stupidly bought them when meeting my friends in another city to go to the cinema and had to carry them around all day and on the train back, what a lemon. I think I paid £20, but that was from Argos.
    Tryp's avatar
I think this was where I got mine, did that version come in a moulded plastic carry case?

I paid 80 quid for this set during lockdown was cheapest i could find at the time.

    I paid £100… during lockdown

    4 x 0.5 kg, 4 x 1.25 kg, 4 x 2.5 kg

    2kg, 5kg, 10kg
    17kg

Are the bars 1.5kg each. That seems heavy, mine are certainly way under 1
  15. sadman120's avatar
I still have these haha £21 I think I paid for them over 10 years ago. Started using again during lockdown then…. I guess you can double up the heavier weights

You don't need to go back ten years to see a pound a Kg. I bought some cast iron dumbbells from Lidl from this thread for £10.99 for 10.5kg in Feb 2020

I bought 80kg iron dumbells for 80 quid from Germany about 6 years ago they were brilliant. I feel silly for selling them
  18. Tryp's avatar
They seem to be cheapening the construction of these year on year, my original set of these came in a moulded plastic case, metal spinlocks and a metal grip. I think these now come in a cardboard box? The plastic grip on these stinks and you'll have to wash your hands after to get the smell away, if you're not wearing gloves. At today's prices this is still decent though so heat added (edited)
    italkapple's avatar
My original were exactly as you described! I dislike the plastic handle. What is long term use like?  Does it split etc?
  19. Arsey01's avatar
    4 x 0.5 KG + 4 x 1.25 KG + 4 x 2.5 KG= 17kg. Where are the other 3kg?
    fubob11's avatar
The handle bars themselves i think.

They don't "break" and like many people I've had mine for about 20 years. The metal locks on mine do repeatedly slip and I wouldn't be comfortable putting more than 2 plates on either side because of this (ie ~ 12.5kg max weight with plates provided). Given current prices it's fine but I would consider getting a dumbbell tree if going for this level of weights as they're not too expensive, won't slip and mean you can rotate exercises quickly and hassle free. Personally I prefer a gym membership but that's a few hundred quid a year

Or this one, 30kg for the same price, with metal locks:
