Refreshed 26th Dec 2019 (Posted 30th Nov 2019)

This was posted by @The_Joker_Dark_Knight in August but prices have reduced since then & Youtube have made the process easier so I think worth a repost.

YouTube Music Premium in India is 99 rupees (£1.07) vs £9.99 UK

or 149 rupees (£1.60) for a family plan vs £14.99 UK.

Full Premium is £1.39 vs £11.99 UK

or Family Premium is £2.04 vs £17.99 UK

YouTube Music Premium includes 100% membership of Google Play Music.
See comparison chart below if you want to see the difference between Music Premium vs Premium.

Signing up is really easy.

1. Use a VPN to connect to YouTube via India (if you don't know how to use VPNs check the thread here - I used VPN Unlimited as I have one of the Stacksocial lifetime memberships).

2. Log in via your normal account and purchase a Premium membership.

3. Enter your card details ideally using a fee free card.

4. You no longer need to provide an Indian address, just a state, choose any, it doesn't matter.

5. Done. Switch back to a UK connection and enjoy YouTube Premium and Google Play Music.

Edit:

Thanks for your your heat

From @HigginsSamuel

Been thinking of doing this for ages.
Just did it on laptop using free vpn that works: urban-vpn.com/loc…pn/

Used Monzo to pay, had to put in an address on youtube but could put - in the first field.
Then town: Mumbai
State: Maharashtra
Zip: 400014

Tips to avoid Indian suggestions.

1. Before you subscribe, create a new gmail account. This is the account that will get all the Indian suggestions. Add your regular account as a family member - UK suggestions only then.

--------------------------------

From @ashfp

When creating a family account, if you receive the error "Looks like you're in a different country than the family manager" then you can follow these instructions (found in this older HUKD post: hotukdeals.com/dea…253

If you're going for family membership, once it's all setup, add a uk payment profile which should change your location to the uk. Otherwise you'll get an error saying the family members can't join as they're in different countries.

How do I add a payment profile?

Click here, scroll down to country/region and hit the pencil icon next to it. Then press 'Create new profile' and follow the instructions. Credit to @radeonorama for explaining this so well, just summarised it.

-----------------------------------------

From the comments it works for MOST but if you have problems: - (credit to various OPs for posts)

If you are using the family sharing option you need to follow step 5 and turn off your Indian VPN >before< trying to share with people in the UK. If you're still on Indian VPN, it won't work.

If asked for a billing address rather than state you will need to enter an Indian billing address. At least with fee free cards it doesn't appear Google actually checks this address so you can use wherever you want as long as it is in India, e.g. any hotel etc online.

If it rejects the address use a "Check my IP" site and enter an Indian address close to where your VPN connection is.

You DO NOT ENTER A UK BILLING ADDRESS.

If you have a current UK subscription you can cancel that, connect to VPN and buy Indian one but you may not get free month, or may get a higher price.

Use a fee free card such such as Monzo/Starling - these are free to sign up for.

Once connected go to onto a "Check my IP" site and make sure your VPN connection is actually showing as in India. On VPN Unlimited I used "India - Karanataka Bangalore".

Try different/dummy Google account.

Make sure you disconnect from the India VPN straight away before trying to share invites etc.

I appreciate this always brings out the "stealing from very rich corporations is teh evil", but whatever, YouTube takes $13bn a year and I'm a poor NHS nurse. Guess who needs the money more.
Community Updates
By verifying as a student beforehand in the UK then switching to India it allows you to buy it at half the price, just 85p for full Youtube premium!!
If you click through or buy, retailers may pay hotukdeals some money, but this never affects which deals get posted. Find more info in our FAQs and About Us page.

Would this mean no adverts on YouTube?

I believe so. But you can achieve that by adding ublock origin to your browser. And by using the Youtube Vanced app on your mobile rather that the official app. This has loads of extra benefits also including a dark theme, and the ability to turn your phone screen off while continuing to watch(listen to) your chosen video.

Video Premium is 30 rupee/£1.39 per month. I went for Music as you can block the ads with a free ad blocker.

Yes, if you use Chrome or similar just search the extension store. These used to be glitchy but seem pretty faultless now.

Exception might be if you cast a lot, e.g. to Chromecast, as AFAIK it doesn't remove the adverts there unless you cast the tab and keep your laptop/phone/computer on.

YouTube music premium? How have I not heard of this. Is it an app like Spotify or via the youtube app/website itself??

I'm looking for a spotify replacement now my sub has run out
Edited by: "Ben5k" 30th Nov 2019
Am I right in saying, you also get Google music too?
It's an app. I've been doing this a few months now. Well worth it. Cost me exactly £1.40 this month.
Been thinking of doing this for ages.

Worked out at 129 rupees, which is £1.40 a month through my Monzo account.
Worth every penny!

Yes, google play music
I mainly just want rid of the ads on YouTube. I didn't mind when they were short and only one ad every now and again but it's getting more like TV ads now with them cropping up regular and sometimes more than one at a time.

Thing is I don't like to watch on a PC or phone. I like to watch on TV, usually via my Xbox or PlayStation. Is there anything you can do on there to get rid of the ads?

Pay the 129 rupee (£1.39) option which is full YouTube Premium and removes all the ads.

Block the ads on the app or the browser? I would be interested to know if there is any ad blocker that blocks the YT ads on the app.
deleted142888330/11/2019 22:26

YouTube Vanced? Can't find that on the play store.

You won't, you have to download it from their site. It's worth doing though with Youtube's insane Ad barrage of late. The final straw was when I played the blade runner theme and it was halted for 5 separate double ads. I've barely seen any since downloading Vanced, although the very odd one creeps in.

I'm also not sure if i works on Iphones as I have an Android phone.
Thank you for sharing , never knew of this

There isn't, but see my comment above about Youtube vanced. It is essentially the youtube app with loads of added features, more customisation.... and an inbuilt ad-blocker. I found the app about a month ago and love it!
Any idea what the exchange fee will be if I don't have a Monzo etc card. Cheers.

I have YouTube vanced on my android phone, been using it for ages. I wanted something for my Nvidia Shield. Vanced needs a mouse and I prefer to have one less remote/keyboard to keep :-)

Check with your bank, AFAIK normally about 5%, but maybe just get a Starling account or similar? Takes about five minutes if you download the app.

Do you have a link please? It's hard to determine which is legit.
What card type do you need? Tried 3 normal uk ones and said invalid payment method on them all as soon as entered long number.

Not knowing what bank you're with, obviously not. Just get a card like Monzo or Revolut.
£1.40/month is that for ad free YouTube plus YouTube music or is the music subscription separate? I use my TV app so an ad blocker isn't convenient but I also want a music sub
