Refreshed 26th Dec 2019 (Posted 30th Nov 2019)
This was posted by @The_Joker_Dark_Knight in August but prices have reduced since then & Youtube have made the process easier so I think worth a repost.
YouTube Music Premium in India is 99 rupees (£1.07) vs £9.99 UK
or 149 rupees (£1.60) for a family plan vs £14.99 UK.
Full Premium is £1.39 vs £11.99 UK
or Family Premium is £2.04 vs £17.99 UK
YouTube Music Premium includes 100% membership of Google Play Music.
See comparison chart below if you want to see the difference between Music Premium vs Premium.
Signing up is really easy.
1. Use a VPN to connect to YouTube via India (if you don't know how to use VPNs check the thread here - I used VPN Unlimited as I have one of the Stacksocial lifetime memberships).
2. Log in via your normal account and purchase a Premium membership.
3. Enter your card details ideally using a fee free card.
4. You no longer need to provide an Indian address, just a state, choose any, it doesn't matter.
5. Done. Switch back to a UK connection and enjoy YouTube Premium and Google Play Music.
Thanks for your your heat
Been thinking of doing this for ages.
Just did it on laptop using free vpn that works: urban-vpn.com/loc…pn/
Used Monzo to pay, had to put in an address on youtube but could put - in the first field.
Then town: Mumbai
Tips to avoid Indian suggestions.
1. Before you subscribe, create a new gmail account. This is the account that will get all the Indian suggestions. Add your regular account as a family member - UK suggestions only then.
When creating a family account, if you receive the error "Looks like you're in a different country than the family manager" then you can follow these instructions (found in this older HUKD post: hotukdeals.com/dea…253
If you're going for family membership, once it's all setup, add a uk payment profile which should change your location to the uk. Otherwise you'll get an error saying the family members can't join as they're in different countries.
How do I add a payment profile?
Click here, scroll down to country/region and hit the pencil icon next to it. Then press 'Create new profile' and follow the instructions. Credit to @radeonorama for explaining this so well, just summarised it.
From the comments it works for MOST but if you have problems: - (credit to various OPs for posts)
If you are using the family sharing option you need to follow step 5 and turn off your Indian VPN >before< trying to share with people in the UK. If you're still on Indian VPN, it won't work.
If asked for a billing address rather than state you will need to enter an Indian billing address. At least with fee free cards it doesn't appear Google actually checks this address so you can use wherever you want as long as it is in India, e.g. any hotel etc online.
If it rejects the address use a "Check my IP" site and enter an Indian address close to where your VPN connection is.
You DO NOT ENTER A UK BILLING ADDRESS.
If you have a current UK subscription you can cancel that, connect to VPN and buy Indian one but you may not get free month, or may get a higher price.
Use a fee free card such such as Monzo/Starling - these are free to sign up for.
Once connected go to onto a "Check my IP" site and make sure your VPN connection is actually showing as in India. On VPN Unlimited I used "India - Karanataka Bangalore".
Try different/dummy Google account.
Make sure you disconnect from the India VPN straight away before trying to share invites etc.
I appreciate this always brings out the "stealing from very rich corporations is teh evil", but whatever, YouTube takes $13bn a year and I'm a poor NHS nurse. Guess who needs the money more.
