These aren't bad but for a bit extra it may be worth getting the 4gb …These aren't bad but for a bit extra it may be worth getting the 4gb version:[Video] Hope this helps...

are you sure about that? according to intels listing this cpu, like it's predecessor, only supports 2Gb RAM

Would avoid anything under 4Gb ram and 64Gb storage

2Gb ram is not enough ram to multi task without waiting for your cuppa to mash
32Gb storage and you'll be joining the many thousands who will need technical specialist or to fart about with something that wasn't thought of for the everyday user.

4GB or 4 Foot?

Before anyone mentions "great for kodi".
It's not, it's got intel hd 4000 graphics which are useless for kodi at this point.
Yes will decode h264 1080p - no chance for 4k, crap de-interlacing of live tv, no chance of anything h265, not even sd, no chance of visulizations at reasomanle performnce etc

People are using these to build their own powerful firewall running OPNsense at half the price of an expensive new router. Not this model though because it only has 1 LAN port but the ones that have dual or more.

If you had owned such a device then you would not make such an ill informed post.

Kodi works very well and breezes through 8 bit H265 and eats a lot of 4K for breakfast.

Don't forget that HDMI 1.4 is adequate for 4k@30hz.

Likewise, de-interlacing of live TV is fine.

I have owned, used and tested 8 such boxes in the Z8300/Z8350 range and Kodi performance has been excellent with all of them.

All that is required is understanding of the SOC limitations, which for the majority of uses, will be fine.

Being a Windows based box too, services such as Netflix, Now TV, Sky, Amazon Prime, All 4 etc work out of the box, so no restrictions that are often found with Android boxes.

As far as Windows is concerned, light tasks will be fine and effective browsing has to be done through Edge as Chrome performance on all Cherry Trail devices is poor.

And when installing applications, make sure that you keep 8Gb free as many of the major OS updates require this to complete, so on board space may become an issues.

Gigabit Ethernet and Dual band WiFi should keep streamers happy enough too.

For the price, it's a good alternative to an Android box, where limitations on those prevent use of required services.

I'm after one with multiple LAN ports, do you know of any for a good price of this size?
Thanks

anyone running a box like this as a media server?

ive currently got a huge old loud desktop pc hidden in a cupboard that's plugged into a usb HD that serves up stuff ( upto 8gb 1080p ) to a kodi box and plex thru ps4 in my front room.

i wonder if something like this would replace it well?

So your saying the cheap £30 Android boxes that are less spec than these can run 4K but this computer thats better spec than my 2gb Andriod box that runs 4K with no probs, cant ??
Dream on.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying.

Your Android box has dedicated hardware on the SOC to decode the 4K content, it's called "decoding in hardware".
Intel HD4000 has no such hardware, in fact even the last gen of Intel NUCs couldn't do 4K content without being an unwatchable skipping mess.

EDIT - See deal has been updated. My comment was about the HD4000...which this deal originally wrongly stated.
EDIT2 Actually I'm still right

Do me a favour mate, talk about patronizing.
The deal originally said HD4000 not HD400...
That kinda changes the spin on it all doesn't it.

Oh you're wrong even taking that into account.
This CPU can't do 4K hevc/h265 smoothly, not even 8-bit content.

I would have done yourself a favour and got it right first time from knowing/checking the specs first and as a user of these boxes, H265 8 bit is smooth as butter in Kodi.

Notice that I said actual user, not somebody guessing, so not wrong but right from considerable experience of the Z83xx series SOC.

Reading the info in the link you provided and then following a link given on that forum it actually contradicts what you're claiming:

avforums.com/rev…540

8 bit HEVC 4K is in fact achievable. Ok it's only up to 30fps but it still does it - according to that review.

So taking this and Reddit's actual experience as a user I'd say you've got a facts malfunction going on there
