ZDNet Readers' Choice: Top 25 FREE, lightweight apps

A handy list of 25 Free apps available to download from the site.

In February, I asked ZDNet readers for the free, lightweight applications they simply cant live without. After tallying the suggestions in the comments and via e-mail and there were an awful lot of good suggestions, believe me here are the 25 most popular

Nice.

I have most of these already , but I hadn't seen the one called "Everything", it's much better than Windows Search.

Heat+rep.

Very interesting indeed - good find and a great discussion starter for the offices around the country. I like the looks of VLCso will download it and can recommend Irfan and CCleaner as well from my personal use.

Firefox - lightweight??? Don't know what they are smoking, but they haven't seen the RAM usage or amount of disk accesses it uses when surfing the web compared to Opera & MSIE 7/8. (and you can time each of those disk accesses when you are running it on Windows on an Acer AspireOne A110, believe me)

Good list all the same though, I'd already chosen 11 of those programs to go on my netbook - I'd forgotten about IrfanView and KeePass, they'll be going on now!

thanks

very nice find i wish i could stress the important of running these app from my netbook.

Good find thanks for sharing op

I would add

Sumatra PDF > Foxit (less nag screens)
Chrome > Firefox (faster)

Just my 2 cents, didn't know about CutePDF, heat added

As well as VLC I find Media Player Classic quite good. And Google chrome, in the league of lightweight browsers.

Media Player Classic - mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/

My main use for Media Player Classic is on the train, VLC seems to freezeup/skip a little on a bumpy train ride, but MPC is just fine.

Google Chrome - google.com/chrome
Try it out for yourself. Im sold on it. Very fast.

winrar for unzipping files is the nuts too

+1 chrome

VLC not pretty, but to misquote Samuel Jackson in Jackie Brown, not much to beat it .....

"When you absolutely, positively got to watch every **************** video on you hard drive, accept no substitutes."

Thanks OP, lots of good stuff on this list. I would like to add the following:

DeskPins

users.forthnet.gr/pat…tml

Which I find extremely useful - it allows you to "pin" a window to the desktop so that it stays on top of all the other windows you open ... great program and it is free !

+1 chrome (changed from firefox 3 days ago, and haven't thought about going back once - SO fast !)

And wow - everything is really useful ! Have used autohotkey to bind to to Win+F (thus replacing windows search FOREVER)
