I am on the look out for something for my 7 year old. I think he would be bitterly disappointed with one of these - should be suitable for up to the age of 6 not 6 and over. Doubt this would run the programs he regularly uses at an acceptable speed.

I brought one of these and it runs At a reasonable speed, I took off their protective software and loaded Avg instead, seems a good buy.

How do you know if an atom pcu is powerful enough for his 7 year old though? I can think of many 'childrens' programs this would not be suitable for.

Is the battery on this thing replaceable? Could I order a better one for it anywhere?

Voted HOT nevertheless, very respectable specs for the price.

Looks okay... but I do wish Intel would let manufacturers use a higher resolution with their Atom chips... or have things changed now?

Have you seen how online games like Moshi Monsters and Bin Weevils crush your system? They cripple the Aspire One netbook my son plays them on (dual core 1GB RAM). I would be surprised if they even ran at all on this deal.

You could buy a decent dual core refurb and a new warrantied compatible battery for it for £99

This is a fine example of a waste of money

Check out Asus Outlet. You can get some fantastic netbooks refurbed for £99!

Whilst this seems like a good price for a basic net book, it comes with the ancient windows XP which is nearly unsupported, and it's not got enough memory.

Sorry but I see this as a cynical way of exploiting naive parents as its really only suitable for basic web browsing, email and a bit of word processing with a cut-down editor, and not the games that the kids will want to play.

We have a somewhat similar netbook and it fails to run the flash games on cbbc adequately.

Seems a good deal to me. I've noticed little difference between my single and dual core atoms. If it's not capable of running games your kids want to play then you'll need a laptop with a normal pentium or similar processor. Which will cost a lot more than £99. A good idea in my experience would be to install a 2 gig memory model if possible. Costs £20 roughly.

I wouldn't advise getting this as a gaming machine - but then I'd like to see links to a machine anywhere near £99 that is. If you want to get something that your kids will be happy with for gaming you'll be paying at least double. Nothing exploitative about selling a netbook with win XP for £99. The exploitative stuff were the Win CE netbooks - they were not capable of even the most basic tasks that one would want to do.

So much ignorance in this thread concerning the atom processor and xp.

If people are happy to **** money up the wall on more expensive hardware for their dribbling offspring then go ahead.

I think they use this resolution as the windows licence is cheaper

I got one of these for our preschool many many years ago. You need to look beyond the spec. what you are paying for is a BOMB PROOF kids laptop. The keyboard is spill proof, you can drop it repeatedly without damage and the keyboard is at an optimum size for small hands.

You're not buying a hardware spec as such you're buying a laptop built for young children, now if you're going to supervise every minute of their use and be careful etc then I wouldn't bother BUT if it's going to be used in a "harsh" environment they're worth their weight. Ours still looks brand new despite being about 4/5 years old now and getting an absolute pasting most days

Oh and for those moaning about not enough RAM etc our children use the 2simple software and it runs PERFECTLY on it along with cbeebies website/games etc. I think people are spoilt on spec these days, ok it aint playing COD but it's not designed for that it's designed for simple use for young children and they aren't that demanding.

XP is still a very good, stable, light on resources OS.This netbook would be unusable if Vista or 7 were installed on it.

This seems like a great deal for a little netbook. Hot.

Yeah, because we need to learn from yourself, the maestro of how to spend money wisely.

For a higher spec, try this one with Windows 8 :-

100 squid for a kiddies PC, running Windows XP (nothing wrong with XP), that can browse the internet - Bargain.

Looks crap, cheap and useless. I would much rather spend an extra £30 and get a tablet for the kids. COLD

Yeah because a laptop is directly comparable to a tablet

A tablet is less versatile and a lot more fragile, HOT

I adapted the latest Intel graphics drivers to give me higher perceived resolutions on my atom, they worked for my Acer 531h and my bros Acer 8.9 150.... Let me know if your interested

Since when does a 6 year old need a laptop? Seems like bad parenting to me.

Stupid comment

Bad teaching in our schools too then because they have them there too, start them off as early as possible I say give them headstart with skills that will be usefull.

£149.99 on Amazon, so at £50 off whatever people's views of it, its a bargain!

Why on earth should parents get these sort of presents for their kids? It's all i want these days without actually getting kids to appreciate what they got!

the only concern I would have, is that because it's £99.99, and checking the reviews on Amazon, it seems a little hit and miss, if it goes wrong, you're going to struggle to get your money back through the credit card (if you pay by credit card)?

Looks like those netbook kids in Argentina all got for free from the goverment.

Seems good to me as long as you can get the windows off it and put a far less resource hungry linux on it, jobs a gooden. I wouldn't let a young child anywhere near most kit it's asking for trouble.

well, even though I agree that no one has a monopoly of the truth, the presented link wasn't a fine example of poor deal, it was just a proof that brainless morons, clueless ignorants are offered the power of vote here .This ultrabook (Acer Aspire S3) is brilliant and the price was very, very good indeed. This deal should have been flaming hot.

This isn't just for kids. If you put an SSD in it it would be a very robust unit for taking travelling. Put a 64gb sd card in and you have heaps of storage for photos movies and music.

Seems like a decent deal but I think the main concern I would have is the quality, Amazon reviews suggest it's not reliable and problems getting it sorted with CS. Shame, have a 4yr old that this would be perfect for. For those that argue against the specs can they come up with something better that is kid proof, a tablet is not kid proof!!

Because being ignorant is seen as cool among their peers. Little do they realise it's exactly the opposite when they try to find work or live a decent life. Back to the dole queue I guess.

I bought this for my daughter a few years ago when they cost £200 and it was good while it worked. The screen went white just outside of its warranty and I couldn't get anyone to fix it. I gave up trying to get their CS to help me. Wished I'd just bought a net book.
