How does this compare to the acer revo 3610?

Good for a XBMC

Original Poster

Similar Spec.

I have a acer revo 3610, bought about a year ago at £180 form ebuyer (with 1G RAM & 160G HDD and Keyboard & Mouse). It is good for HTPC to play 1080p

This one has wireless N better than 3610 (b/g only), but need add RAM + HDD

I have no need of this, but have spare HD and memory. I can feel another hackintosh project coming on.

Hackintosh run on an ION?

Of course, and this box looks even more compatible than the Revo 3610 I did the other year by the looks of things.

If we can get the exact model number I can hunt out some links on Hackintoshing it - I'm interested in this one, as my mate has one running with Windows Home Server 2K11 on it; it's not a power-house, not what you would expect with the bundled CPU, but it's more than enough for his needs along with a couple of external USB HDDs attached for storage & backups.

There was also somebody posting about installing a 1TB hard disk into the unit as well - can't remember if it was here or on a technical forum but I'll see if I can hunt out the link, as I think it was 12.5mm in height model that he used (I could be wrong though).

Oh well in for a penny (well £74.99) in for a pound. Another nettop joins the house. So thats 3 nettops for 3 tvs!

"Unfortunately Zotac ION2 NetTop (A40KG) is now discontinued and has been removed from your basket. You can continue using the buttons at the bottom of the page."

very nice, I'd get one of these as a media centre PC if hadn't just got a PS3 which seems to double fairly well as one

Got and order confirmation but by stock it states 'while stock lasts' so no idea if I'll get one or not.

What does anybody who ordered invoice say?

Damn! missed out, was looking for these last night as well!

Pretty sure it is the HD-ID11 and there are plenty of links for hackintoshing. I vaguely remember someone cracking audio via HDMI on a Zotac, something I never managed on the Revo.

I paid via Paypal, which generally prioritises a sale as the money is transferred immediately. Mine still quoted WSL on the page when completing the order/invoice, but no mention of this on the subsequent order confirmation email.

Yes its on the order page as that. Sadly I don't have access to the email address I have on the account as I'm away from home so it will just have to be a surprise (or not) when I get home on the 8th.

I think there is 1 left in the Bromley store

Damn missed it!

Just curious, anyone know whether this can be used to boot XBMC from USB flash drive, thereby bypassing the need for a HDD?

aw man, no longer a valid link?

My Dad bought one of these and there's no mention anywhere on any of the box or paperwork that this is a ION2 device the only mention of this is on the Maplin site, be warned and im pretty sure it would say that it was as i have a Revo and the big selling points of these is its next generation ION2 you would think they would want to advertise it. Even GPUz doesn't show it as ION2 i suspect that its a mistake on Maplins side.

To be fair, there isn't really that much performance difference between ION2 and the original ION.

Ordered this, great spec for the price shame I'd earlier ordered a revo from Ebuyer I'm going to have to send back..

bear in mind the raspberry pi's coming out in a month or so that costs less than half what this costs and will run on a 5v usb charger

Different breed of device..... This was a bargain but I hesitated and missed it lastnight.....
Will keep an eye out on the Raspberry Pi though.....

ION2 isn't next generation, it's inferior to ION "1".

(edit, do some research if you don't believe me, the ION2 is useless for 1080p material due to not having the required license from Intel to connect the memory controller to the GPU, basically boils down to the gpu on the ION2 only have a single PCI-E lane for bandwidth, this makes 1080p jerky and unwatchable)...

Google will verify this, god help you if you're cancelling a decent Revo 3610 for this, assuming this is ION2, haven't checked.

it will run xbmc, output 1080p video and act as a torrent client - the only way it will be a different breed is that it's run on linux and produced cheaply!

this still a good deal for today's standards though

My online order status has changed to 'stock' No.

Guess that means I'm not getting one. I wonder if anybody (apart from staff!) managed to get one.

My order never appeared on my account online although I got an order confirmation email. Called Maplins to see if it had been cancelled and they said it had been despatched today.

Cheers mate - forgot about this deal thread (bit of a hectic day yesterday TBH) but it appears that the Hackintoshing for this model of nettop is covered a lot at the InsanelyMac Forum (along with other internet forum & blogs posts) plus here's a video from YouTube, covering how to open up the case for installing the hard disk & RAM for those who've managed to get it successfully ordered.

Mines been shipped.. hopefully will be able to boot from the SD card slot as i want to install openelec.tv to the sd card and not bother with a HDD

Rang up customer services & confirmed that there is limited stock left scattered around but not showing due to ppl reserving them & not showing up on stock inventry systems. So you may see a few poping up from time to time if no one picks them up. So keep trying online & calling through to the branches.

Use saynoto0870.com for localised numbers but you can call through to customer services via 01709 774 470 to be put through to local branches & reserve the Zotac.

1. Reserve the item with name & number & get the advisors/branch manager name.
2. Go straight to your own local branch & inform them that you have item reserved at another Maplin branch that they can contact direct for verification of stock reserved & pay £79.99 + £10.00 courier fee - £4.00 vouchercloud discount. Local branch will ask for details to call you back once item is delivered.
3. Go home & wait for the callback. Simples.

There's one brand new display model in cabinet left at Llandudno that you can reserve to be delivered to your local branch but must be paid for in-store with £10 courier fee extra. Branch manager suggested head office to request stock cat return from branch for online delivery but you will be very very lucky to request this from customer services. Tried it & they don't wanna know. Better to paid £10 extra for the hassle & save yourself petrol costs.

Stock Code: A40KG Zotac ION2 NetTop

vouchercloud has £4 mobile phone app voucher discount code VCLOUD4 when you spent £40 or more in-store too. Expires: 30/11/11. You will be able to access this offer from the vouchercloud app on your phone. iPhone & Android supported. Don't worry about T&C about you must be offer is for Orange customers only. I'm on O2 & still works.

Total paid £85.99 with £4 discount (not tried the DISCOUNT5 code myself so possible £9 total discount if allowed with VCLOUD4 code) at another branch that confirmed there are a couple left been reserved already so I'm sure there is stock left scattered around but waiting to be picked up. So hang in there guys/gals if you're looking for a cheap low power nettop htpc.

You won't be able to buy brand new at this price even 2nd hand from eBay. So this is a absolute bargain price even the £10 courier fee extra.

Just received it and it is indeed as described in the OP. Only fly in the ointment is that the adapter uses a clover leaf power cable rather than the more common figure of eight, but that is quibbling at this price.
Box and everything is pristine and all film covers in place. Not a hint of ex-display about it.

[edit] According to the warranty card, this comes with a two year guarantee, which is nice.

Well mine online order still states 'stock' NO but it has now changed to 'dispatched' so will have to wait and see if it arrives.

Didn't notice the order tracking at the bottom. Was dispatched a 15:44 by royal mail so it tells me.
