A bit niche I know, but it's £4.85 at Asda and even more at Boots.
Excellent deal if you suffer from cold sores and were going to shop with Amazon Pantry anyway.

Poundland sometimes sell Virasorb which contains the same ingredient and is just as effective and for only £1. Worth checking that if you have one close by.

I think the best place to start is why you get them. Aside from being a carrier of the virus, they come on from illness, stress, UV light, cold wind and diet.

Luckily we have low UV in the UK and cold wind isn't something we have to endure much of. So let's focus on diet which in turn will help with illness and stress.

In the human body we have 12 amino acids, some of them are created naturally and some can only come from foods.

Arginine is an amino acid that's created naturally and unfortunately replicates the virus if you consume too much of it.

The trick is to greatly reduce the amount of arginine you consume, so you need to change your diet. You need to be religious about this and your life will change.

Ok so what foods contain the most arginine, and what do you need to stop eating and drinking. The foods highest in arginine are nuts, seeds, orange juice, grape juice, brown rice and dark chocolate From now on you have to stop eating these foods and drinks.

The reason for this is because there's an amino acid that isn't replicated in the human body which actually prevents outbreaks, yes prevents them! This amino acid is called Lysine.

What we are going to do is replace an arginine diet into a lysine based one. To do this we need to start eating lysine rich foods. What foods are high in lysine you may ask, well anything dairy, cheese, milk, fish ( not shellfish ), mangos, apples, advocado, papaya, marmite.

( Look up high lysine foods for more )

You want to incorporate those foods into your diet daily. The bottom line is eat more lysine a day that arginine.

To make things easier for the first 6 months get some lysine supplements, wheat free ones. I can send the link to some great ones, which you take one a day.

You also wants to start eating cherries. Cherries contain a chemical that helps the kidneys filter arginine, meaning you aren't storing too much in the body.

I really do hope that helps.
I just loathe cold sores. They always get you when you are on a low ebb. If I could, I would drag the virus into an alleyway and give it a good kicking.

Anyone who suffers from cold sores will love this deal..
Anyone who suffers from cold sores can actually prevent them from ever appearing with the right diet. Having to just deal with them is not the way anyone should live their life. As for this stuff, there's far better creams, Melissa cream can shave off an entire week and even prevent an outbreak from happening if you catch it early enough.

Whatever happened to the red light treatment. I have one from Lloyds chemists that I bought for about £15 years ago, it works really well stopping cold sores coming up or if I do not catch them in time it reduces treatment to 3 or 4 days. But I have noticed that they are not sold anymore?

I used mine only a couple at weeks ago, I'm still amazed how well/how it works.

Thankyou give it a try
I agree but you cannot buy them anywhere now
Thanks OP, my son is a carrier and suffers most through Autumn/winter (cold weather & illnesses) so this is perfect timing! Stocked up on dog food and added a couple of qualifying items for free delivery!

The scientific literature, although sparse, is actually relatively convincing that lysine, even applied topically, can be effective.

Bring it on, sparse or otherwise. AFAIK only antivirals have proven efficacious, but I'm a bit out of the loop and a few years out of date.
Lysine tablets are very effective. Also wear sunscreen lip balm during sunny days. Lots of hydration. Good sleep. Regulate stress via exercise, mindfulness, and routine. Cold sores tend to strike when my energy levels are low and/or during stressful times which is also usually due to/trigger for poor dietary choices (vicious circle!).

Theres no one singular prevention that works all the time but I've greatly reduced and shortened outbreaks via these methods. Hope this helps.

If you have throughly researched the literature then I won't be able to convince you. There are no studies that say lysine supplementation conclusively reduces outbreaks.

However, it seems fairly certain that the lysine to arginine ratio does effect expression of the virus. And I think there is enough evidence of positive results from other studies, particularly veterinary medicine papers, to make me feel there is something behind the claims.

Do I think that the benefits outway the side effects of changing your whole diet, probably not, but I think it is unfair to call the underlying basis pseudoscience.

This is sold at Poundland all the time- if you haven't got a Prime account.
Just make home made kefir and you’ll never get these or mouth ulcers again even if you bite your mouth by accident.

Agreed, though if pitched as experience and not fact then I’m all ears so it’s still a valuable piece of info. Personally after a mass of peer reviewed journals from trusted sources I found cheap as chips home made kefir worked for me. Also verified by blood tests that my low immunity lifted. It didn’t fix me, I was always fixed, I just added what was missing ie a poor microbiome haha then the body did it’s thing. Certainly a relationship there but too complex to claim causality but the efficacy is high for me personally.

Yep....and statistically, you probably have it too. According to the World Health Organisation, an estimated 3.7 billion people under the age of 50 have it. A much smaller proportion exhibit symptoms such as cold sores.

+1 on this. I used to suffer terribly, especially in the winter and when I was run down or tired. I take the 1000mg L-Lysine Supplements daily after dinner and it cut my outbreaks down significantly. I also use the L-Lysine lip balm when I do get one and this also reduces the blistering period, sometimes they rescind completely.
A friend of mine suffers too and she has cut out dairy, which worked for her.

Cutting our dairy wouldn't prevent them as dairy contains the highest amounts of lysine. I'm glad it worked for her though whatever the reason. No one should have to suffer.
Not available any more
Lysine powder or tablets are good to stop getting these. Failing that I prefer the zovirax pump.

These are the best you can get because they're also wheat free ( wheat has lots of arginine ) on the subject of bread, If you suffer really bad switch to Rye, sourdough or gluten free bread to reduce your arginine even further. However most people just need to remove nuts and seeds from their diet, basically tell yourself you have a nut allergy and live your life that way.
thanks

Or to actually get to the point, you can supposedly counter cold sores with your diet, by eating more Lysine than Arginine.
