Yes, I agree. Heat.

got two of these a few months ago but they had a bundle deal where you could add a 2TB hard drive for about a 100 quid.

NIce Price.... costs a lot at the moment to fill them with good sized HDD's..

How noisy are these ?

Sounds perfect apart from the dog slow transfer speeds. Why are so many NAS devices so slow?!

Will this stream to my revo and wdtv live? If I buy this what will I need to buy? A hard drive to put in it? How many drives can I put in it? New to networking

streams to my Revo RV100 just fine

yes you need to buy HDDs - it will take 2

EliTom

Anyone know if I would need to connect this directly to my router? Or could I have it stored elsewhere and connected via Homeplugs?

Is it true you can use this a bit torrent server?, so say I can leave that device downloading/uploading instead of using my pc?. Thanks.

Thanks Eli. Two more questions. 1) will this stream 1080p easily? 2) can I use more then one NAS drive in the house? I will probably have some more later lol

Yes you can run it as a BT server

My question was does the hard drives that need to be put in have to be 7200rpm or can they be 5400rpm?

Home plug is fine.

TCB 2.02%

Ordered - got 2 spare 1TB drives so £44 for a NAS cant be bad!

What do you need to do to a +4gb file to stream to a PS3 with this NAS. I believe the Synology will transcode it on the fly. Does this machine do anything similar?

Also anyone used one of these connected to a VM Superhub as I have read reports some NAS machines don't always work with it....

Thanks

Might be worth looking around for a cheap D-Link DNS 323, installing Alt-F and then you can use it's USB port for an external HDD and have a RAID5 setup.

Daft laddie question...

If I buy this, does that mean I can listen to my music stored on it through my squeezeboxes without having a pc on?

And Could I plug this into it or rip the drive out of this and whack it in there?

yes streams 1080p just fine to my Revo

never tried more than one NAS but I guess you could - they will need to have different names / IP address that's all

from dabs

Centralized media server for multimedia streaming

The ZyXEL NSA221, DLNA 1.5-certified 2-Bay Media Server, supports multiple server technologies for multimedia sharing. Acting as an iTunes server, SqueezeCenter, personal blog and photo album server for PCs, laptops and SqueezeBoxes, the NSA221 can make it easy to stream and share music and photos.

and yes if the WD drive is removeable. you can plug it in via USB but teh NAS will want to format it first before it can read it !

EliTom

Elitom I found this cheaper on ebay via dab's outlet:

ebay.co.uk/itm…62f

If you use TCB via ebay over the dabs website you should get more cashback as it's under the computer section.

I have mine connected to a VM super Hub, to three pc's through the hub and via homplug to my Samsung tv. Works great! Also have it as a print server.

Hope that answers some questions

How does the BT server work? Just now i have to use utorrent and i have to have my pc on constantly. Would i be able to use utorrent? With the same utorrent settings? Some trackers are very specific on the client you use which is why i ask.

Thats what I want to know also, I also use utorrent and peer block so would want the nas to do the same.

It has been this price from BT for a while now.

I was tempted by it just before Christmas but the speeds put me off: digitalversus.com/nas…tml

yes agree transfer speeds are not the best but for the price its still a nice bit of kit

when I first had mine and transferred about 700GB of munic is did take all night but just left it running !!

once its done its done then smaller data chunks are not a problem - no problem streaming 1080p TV shows / movies to my YV via Revo RV199

EliTom

@cynic-al Not sure if this runs Squeezebox server. My netgear readynas does

Thanks eiltom...so I'd have to re-transfer my music, and then setup squeezecentre on it.

Blimey, looks like a right ball-ache, with problems!

Can u use newsgroups with this and does this have wol

Hopefully better than the pile of phoo d-link dns323 that I currently use.

And is there apps for iPhone to use with this

Grt Price Heat Added

Doesn't this have semi-broken DLNA functionality the same as the single drive, better processor NSA-310? (ie. it's necessary to do a full database rebuild to detect new media)

If so, then if that's your intended use I'd be extremely cautious making a purchase. But for any other use...

That idiot puts a couple of 10k RPM in there then complains about the noise levels. Also both those units that he compares speed with cost over £500.

Thanks for the link though, this wasn't a rant at you : )

I have 3 Nas drives connected to my router

Be aware that those HomePlug things cause dreadful RF interference! There are even calls to BAN these devices, such are the problems they cause:
