can this run Plex?

I keep thinking I should get a NAS but I probably don't really need one and should just keep sharing my media files from my PC, or plug my USB 2TB HDD into my RPi and store my media on that.

The fans in these things puts me off as well, as I get annoyed by the noise they make and I'm not sure why they're even needed when my USB HDDs work fine without them.

I have the same quandary, I want one but I can't really see any good reason to buy one tbh. Like you I simply keep my data on USB drives and take them to wherever I want to play them. A NAS seems like a complicated way of doing the same to me but I guess others have different reasons to choose them?

A Raspberry pi and external drive is a great alternative.

I have one. Pro's, Power up with one button, access to all your media files through wireless, if its connected to a wireless router. I can access my files with my PS3, my phone, my computer and my Humax set top box. It runs Linux and has a number of built in apps, P2P client is one (running linux means no virus issues). It also has an auto shutdown at a predetermined time, set by the user.

It is a little noisy but quieter than a PC and it can be hidden in a cupboard if it irritates that much, do i really need it?...........No but its a useful gadget.

I have a 2 bay version and I find it very handy for connecting to from outside via my mobile or tablet.

I have the 310, been running for years without a hitch. Regular firmware updates. Has SMART monitoring, WordPress, Peer to Peer download, Twonky Media Server, iTunes, google drive, own cloud and dropbox compatibility. Would definitely recommend

I had the 310S version and got ONE firmware update in 12 months and found that many of the packages were out of date - owncloud was at least 3 versions behind the current one and they had NO plans to update it.

I eventually upgraded to a Synology DS114 which eclipses the Zyxel in every way.

The Synology DS114 is 3 times the price.

It is, but it's very much a case of you get what you pay for. The Zyxel is cheap and cheerful for a basic NAS with *some* useful features. The Synology is at the higher end with a lot of useful features.
