lol they need to be on the same ring mains, most houses have separate ring mains for upstairs and downstairs, my house only being a 2 bedroom 1930's house has 1 ring main for the whole house. I have hooked two plugs up to a separate ring main.

Unless your wiring is ancient, they will work. I use them in my three floor Victorian house (rewired in the 1970s).

Are there advantages of these over a wireless system.

Knowing little about them I assume you plug your router into one and your pc into a.n.other?

They work in my house, last rewired in the 60's.

    1930's house.

    Faster, more reliable and secure.

    Exactly.

They are better because there is no drop in connection. I have one connected to my wireless router in the livingroom, the other is connected to my main PC on the third floor (LAN connection). The other computers pick up the wireless from the router ok.

I highly recommend them. I stream movies from my PC upstairs to my Apple TV downstairs in the louge, in HD too.

Can you use them for telephone lines as well?

Line in for the house at the front, sky tv at the back. Never have the phone connected to sky because i don't want to run a line that far just for that. Could you use these for this use?

I doubt it. The connections are ethernet, not RJ45.

They do work on different rings.

Then I have acheived the impossible! I run 4 x 200Mbps Zyxel units on different rings. The signal is not stopped at the Meter board and in theory if you use this in a block of flats some of the signal could leak out to other users.

In a flat you would have 1 ring, unless you've got a 6 bedroom pent house?

Will HomePlug work over different 'ring circuits' such as upstairs and downstairs ?

The simple answer is yes. Technically this is because the fuses in your consumer unit for seperating the different circuits in your home are nothing more than smart switches. Therefore a connection exists between each circuit and allows the HomePlug products to communicate with each other.
