1 in 10 parents believe Jaffa cakes count towards 5-a-day

One in 10 parents actually believe Jaffa cakes count towards fruit and vegetable portions, according to a shocking new survey.

Many parents believe snacks such as Jaffa cakes count as part of the five-a-day

But one in 20 do not know real oranges count as part of the five-a-day, the poll revealed.

Cola, spaghetti hoops and fruit-flavoured sweets are also mistakenly believed to contribute to the government guideline for fruit and vegetables.

Only a fifth of children reached the five-a-day standard every day.

Five percent eat none at all, their parents admitted in the survey for Green Giant.

Nutritionist Amanda Ursell told Sky News Online the results are "really shocking" and blames food companies for implying snacks and fruit drinks are healthier than they are.

"My advice to parents would be anything fresh, canned or frozen counts but anything that just contains fruit, like an apple pie, doesn't," she said.

Yeah I never understood that either... sweet potatoes count though don't they?

Not at all surprised, the same amount of people think a spud counts for one a day, and the small amount of peas you get in a pot noodle as one a day!

Crazy, but i bet the same people live on a diet of Jeremey Kyle show and buy all their meals from Iceland following the infamous queen of chavs herself Kerry Katonas "Just 1 poooownd" adverts for Iceland

What I wanna know is how many adults reach there 5 a day cos I know a lot of adults that barely touch fruit and veg.

I do agree that the government should intervene in making fruit and veg cheaper (e.g VAT free etc), as I swear some are getting more and more expensive and you can easily spend around £20 a week per person on a few bits and bobs to keep yourself healthy.

It seems healthier food costs a lot more than carp foods, which is the reason why obesity is becoming more problematic thoughout certain parts of the world.

The crazy thing is, I was surprised to see how many people in Jamaica are so poor but walk around looking trim and with 6 packs (not beer lol) but I'm sure the amount of fruit and veg in their daily diet plays a major part in that.

i  'ed
