£100k to insure £350 Fiat Punto - for this teenager

A TEENAGER on the minimum wage tried to insure his £350 Fiat - and was quoted almost £100,000.
Ben Kinsey, 18, passed his test in December but has not yet been able to afford to drive his ten-year-old Punto.

He has to rely on workmates to ferry him around and, on £4.92 an hour, the trainee electrician fears he'll never get behind the wheel of his motor.

Ben used a price comparison website to look for fully comprehensive quotes. He was amazed at Aviva's quote of £83,600 up front - or £91,625 if he paid in instalments.

That could BUY him a 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. Provident offered £26,474 and Sabre £20,068. Ben tried another website site and the cheapest quote fell - to £10,598. Ben said: "The figures are almost laughable. My car will just have to collect dust.

"With petrol so expensive, it seems almost impossible for me to get on the road."

Ben lives with mum Jane in Salford - a high car crime area in Greater Manchester.

Personal finance expert Mike Naylor said: "Insurers look at not only the postcode but the street people live on."

Yesterday Sabre said the North West was rated high for insurance cover.

Aviva said: "There is clearly a glitch on the system and this quote is incorrect. A senior underwriter will contact Ben to see how we can help."

Males aged 17 to 22 can expect to pay £2,750 on average for insurance, says the AA.

    haha (_;)

Probably already had 3 bans and 8 points on his license before his first lesson X)

    It's all crap.

He's clearly put something in wrong, or says he lives in Libya or something stupid.

1.2L Corsa, 3 year old car, 0 No Years, 1st year driver. £660.

I've just done a dummy quote:

    20 year old Male
    1.8L Mazda MX5 2008 / 57 plate.
No parents / Named Drivers, Full time Student
    £2600.

People shouldn't expect to just bang in details and go with the cheapest one, There's still a lot of money to be saved, you need to ring and drive the price down. This is never the 'lowest' you will get.

Only lazy people pay £2,000 for 12 months insurance to get on the road. That or the blind rich.

It was either that for a Type R but that would of been 10k - plus parking in London is a pain and parking a bmw m3 is hard - I owned a 1994 mini as my first car and the mini cooper s is a beast - top speed 142mph just gotta put the john works kit on it push it to 206bhp

My Prodrive impreza would spank you all, and my daddy would beat up your daddy! J/K but it still would!

These stories though are crap and surface every now and then, no doubt that sort of figure was quoted, when I went through them for a quote the post office was best for me at around 800, however I think they were call Green Insurance or something were over £50k, I should have went to the paper!

Ill just sit at the side with my wee 106 that is gleaming just now btw. Insurance for young people is a joke as we are all idiots on the road, myself included. There can be no driver that can truthfully say that they drive at the speed limit and completely safely at all times, if there was then they wouldnt be young. My insurance is currently a grand, thats came down from 1200 in my first year, all by myself

It is a rip off but unfortunately gotta pay it if I want to be on the road. Pay £100 a month so not that bad and it should go down considerably next year.

Ooh you bitch! Mine cost me over £300.... though the old one (which I still have) is sub £200. Dunno why. I know the Zafira would cause more damage in an accident!

If I were sub 17 and considering buying a car, I think I'd be looking into buying a cheapo moped to insure, regardless of using it, to bring the premiums down and build up a NCD. Not sure if thats doable or if the NCD can be transfered, but it all sounds feasible.

mini car...as cool as they are....it would only get me and the pushchair in.,,,kids would need cab fare to join us..... now theres a thought!

Both my neice and nephew got bought one by their parents when they got their degrees. But have had to have a new gear box after 3 years and continue to have the problems.... In fact the neice is now on gearbox number 3.

Totally agree, Minis are awful cars for gearbox's going and various other problems not to mention its a birds car aswell

Why are people so obsessed with speed when roads are speed limited anyway? Seems stupid to me. I think as you get older you appreciate other aspects of cars such as MPG whilst all the children are reving like mad to prove something. Bless

Mine fell out of an original mini 1275 gt I was being a pratt though and doing burnouts in a car park (young, foolish and without a licence - not good)

The gear box just dropped, must have been rotten on the mounts or weakened somehow.

Top speed doesn't really matter, to me acceleration is where its at so you can pull out at junctions safely but quickly without a risk of still pulling out whilst something rounds the bend.

    Correction:
Part of the reason for high insurance is prats like your former self used to drive without insurance.

I am quite glad about advancements like ANPR systems that flag cars without insurance/mot/tax etc.

yes what I did was stupid and reckless and I can only be thankful that I had no accidents, equally thankful for the couple of spot checks that got me 6 points and made me think twice about doing it again.
