You have to convert the mkvs to MP4 which causes it to lose quality. You could see if there is some custom firmware out there for your TV that allows mkvs to play from USB.

I have tried converting files, but they shrink considerably in the process and im sure they loose quality as you said.

you don't have to lose quality when converting to mp4 mp4 is capable of 1080p. you simply have to convert it at the same quality as the original
