    £11k to spend on a 4x4

I've got a tight budget to spend on a 4x4. I'm hoping to move out to the country in the next few months and want to get something that can cope with all weather. So, does anyone have any of the following, or would recommend any?

    53/04 plate BMW X5
    55/06 plate BMW X3
    07/57 plate Jeep Patriot
    06/56 plate Toyota Rav4
    55/06 plate Kia Sorento
    55/06 plate Honda CR-V

Obviously some will have really high mileages (the BMWs) and some are a lot newer than others, but all are around the right price.

I've been looking based on Fuel Economy and 4x4 ability so far, but any comments appreciated. All seem to have good and bad reviews at the moment

    Honda for reliability.

    A Tractor

Agree with moob, stick to the japanese cars for reliability and performance.

Its needless to say you need an X5 or a Range Rover sports. Range rover isnt an option therefore X5 is what I will chose.

    Volkswagen touareg....Great performance

Another vote for the cr-v. I had the old shape one about 8 years ago and never had a single fault in 2 years.

Economy was quite good even though it was an auto. It runs around in 2wd and switches to 4wd when it looses traction.

thanks guys. Was going to get the Jeep Patriot but will test out a Honda

Slamdunkin, you in any of the oileys at the moment? Matd and AEX seem to be quite good?

Forget about Yank motors, terrible reliability and build quality.

    DNX takeover, good or bad?

Jeep servicing intervals are more frequent than any other car on the road and that includes diffs and gearboxes.

I could get a 03/53 Range Rover for the money, but they are pushing 100k miles!! Still better than all the above?

The Offer doesn't reflect the value of production growth over the last few years...soon as the oil price goes back up, this offer will look like an insult. I also like the way Tom Cross has built this company and hope he is left to carry on.

I have a RR, can't beat them. X5 is a nice motor though.

I also had a drive home in a honda 4x4, CRV? That was a nice car.

    Freelander 2

Hi Chris, do you have a Freelander? How much for services and are they reliable. Really surprised that I can pick up a 56/07 plate for my budget!

Is 90k too high mileage for a 3 year old car? Am I going to start running in to problems soon?

They vary so much in price depending on the model/spec.

I wanted a HSE, so picked up an 07 in March for £20k. You can get a brand new base model for that, but I wanted the toys

The Freelander 2 is very reliable (the Mark 1 Freelander was very poor in comparison).

Services are not too bad. I had one a few weeks ago which was £340 - could have got it for £240 from an independant, but car was going in for warranty work at the same time, and I really couldnt be bothered taking it to two different garages !

As with any cars, the lower the milage, the more expensive it is.

I'd rather opt for a slightly oler one with less milage, but its really upto you.

Oldest Freelander 2 will be on an 06 plate.

I have the 2.2 TDI, average about 35mpg - but it is the nicest car I have had to date. Comfy, lots of toys & a great driving position.

Where abouts are you based ? If your local to me, you can always pop down for a look

The most expensive part i've found so far is tyres.

Your looking at £140-£220 a corner.

I ended up buying a brand new set of alloys with Scorpions for less than £500 - so worth getting a new set of wheels instead of just buying the tyres lol

Silly, but a lot more economical on the wallet

I'm in Aberdeen! Can't seem to find a Freelander 2 from a dealer in my budget, but there's plenty of freelanders. Will keep looking and cheers for the advice

Does it need to be from a dealer ?

The used prices went up this year due to the nasty weather. Everyone wanted one. Took me a few weeks to secure the one I wanted

Stay away from the Freelander 1 though, stick with a Freelander 2 !

Bought a freelander 1.... couldn't stretch to the cost of the freelander 2. But, the dealer just phoned and said the car I wanted has been sold to someone else! Will keep looking

Do you need a high 4x4? If it's space and reasonable off road ability then take a look at the Subaru Outback. Bomb proof, ages well and will be just as good off road than most of the list above.

    Lucky escape there I think!

How about an Isuzu Trooper (both Short & Long Wheel Base), or a Nissan Terrano [II]/Ford Maverick [again, SWB, or LWB options] (you would have spare cash with any of these options)?

Also, you would get a Jeep Cherokee with change to spare (although it wouldn't be as capable as the other vehicles mentioned so far). The Wrangler may be too hard to sit in for prolonged periods (depending on how far you are moving). The Land Rover Discovery is also an option.

I've had a Land Rover Defender 110, Isuzu Trooper Citation, US Ford Expedition, US Chevrolet Suburban, and my partner currently has a Nissan Terrano II.

US vehicles aside, I would recommend the Trooper, and not recommend the Defender. Servicing costs for the Land Rover were very high. Reliability was also a problem. We were driving on the back roads of North Wales in it late one night in February & all the electrics packed up. Eventually got it going again but only had side-lights working. In an unrelated incident the bodywork bends really easily if you back it into a post in a garage forecourt!

I would like something that is high from a seating point of view. Think i'm just going to wait another month and get the ~£15k basic freelander 2

Yes wait, the original Freelander is very unreliable and not a patch on the Freelander 2 !

Even the 2.0 Diesel on an 06 plate??? I've seen a really nice one I can have by Friday

It's crap, don't get it, trust me !!!!

You want the 2.2 Tdi Freelander 2

I wouldn't touch a freelander, you might get lucky and get a good one but it's doubtful imo.

    Vw toureg eats petrol.
