Just put 16GB of ram in my laptop!

it feels good! Now I can give 3 VM's 4GB of RAM and STILL have 4GB left for my host OS!

I'm not sure a ~£50 laptop upgrade deserves bragging rights!

i hope you have an SSD, partitioned, possibly two SSD's.. otherwise, it's all pointless

I think you'll find a 16GB laptop upgrade is £90+.

I can understand having an SSD would speed things up but why the emphasis on partitioned SSD?

Any hoo now I can run VM's like no mans business!

Apologies, you're right. I assumed you have 4 ram slots, not 2

Wish I did have 4 slots then I could put 32GB in! And run a full development, build and deployment environment in virtual machines on one box. drooool......

Where did you hear that?

I run 64bit openSUSE 12.1, RAM is only limited by the number of slots and motherboard support.

why do you need to run 3 VM's?

See first comment.

I had 12gb at 2000MHz & with using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 it only uses up to 8gb.

1 VM I use for Meego/Java dev in Linux. 1 VM hosts all my source code and wiki (SVN + Trac). I may decide to start a Windows XP or 7 VM to list something on ebay or do something in Windows. Plus I might also want to start a OSX VM to do some iOS dev (hopefully soon).

Also since I'd like to take advantage of automated deployment software having a deployment VM provisioned from scratch sounds sensible. Thus even 16GB of RAM seems pitiful in the grand scheme of things.

Surely this would be better done on separate pc's connected by a server?!?

I say good for you brother, computers and laptops are awesome and 16gb is a huge amount of ram, you will never use it but then your money to spend. Just please don't say your laptop is a single core 1600mhz windows 2000 laptop with a cd drive

True but I don't have space for all that kit - and i can't take it on the train with me.

Lol, no it's an i5 Sandybridge Dell XPS 14z.

I've already using 10-12GB, can use about 2-3GB for my host OS, plus 4GB for my linux dev VM plus 4GB for a Windows VM and around 1GB for my source code VM.

Everyone knows VM's LOVE RAM which is why I went for a 16GB of RAM vs an SSD.

But running 4 VM's on a train is impractical since you can hardly see all that's going on etc...

Ah well, you know what you want so I guess good for you...

The Linux Expose and other desktop effects help alot! I only work with 1 VM at a time, but sometimes I need to switch to another one for 10mins or so; so it's very handy. Most of the time the other 2 VM's are not doing much anyway.

Why does everyone just assume he wont use that much ram ? I have 32gb in my server at home running VMware ESX, admittedly i dont leave the server running. But when i do need it up, not only do i use up most of the ram, i also find i'm swapping to disk fairly regularly.
