1959 Number Plates

Found 3rd Sep 2011
Am trying to find out how number plates were laid out in 1959. Was it letters then numbers or numbers then letters? Have had a google, but nothing jumping out at me with the answer.

They where normally 3 numbers and then 3 letters
Pre 1963 Dateless Reg

Dateless reg come in various configurations, either with 1, 2, 3 or 4 digits followed by 1, 2 or 3 letters, or the reverse with 1, 2 or 3 letters followed by 1, 2, 3 or 4 digits. The single or consecutive letters in the registration would originally have been able to identify the area of the country in which the registration was issued (in the above example the TOA indicates that this registration would have been released in Birmingham).
