Does anyone know how I can change my nameservers? I can't see where..

And I can't see no support either which is why I'm asking here.

I've clicked Edit DNS but I can't see nameservers.

Basic DNS Settings

1&1 name server (unmodifiable)

I see that, and I guess that's what i'm supposed to modify.

where are you tring to change the nameservers?

Log into your account.

Click on 'Manage Domains'

You should see a list of your domains. Select the one you want to alter by ticking the box too it's left and click the DNS button on the grey menu bar above it..

This should take you to the DNS settings page. Click 'Edit'.

Under 'Basic DNS Settings', change it to 'My Name Server', and the page should change to allow you to enter the DNS information.

Enter your DNS info and click Save

Did you buy your domain from them - or is it elsewhere?

Original Poster

I bought it from them yesterday.

And are you hosting with them also?

Original Poster

Nope, different host, i'm trying to change the NS to point to my host's servers.

If you only just bought the domain and it was set up to use the 1&1 DNSs, you might have to wait for a day or two before you can change the DNS settings.

Original Poster

Oh, okay, thanks anyway guys, rep coming your way.

Access to nameserver changes should be available straight away!

Now Tom is going to have to wait for 1and1 to get themselves sorted, then another day for the domain to propogate. Very unsatisfactory! When Ive bought domains at 123-reg and hosted eleswhere, the site has been up and running before within an hour of purchase.

However, I'll not be recommending 123-reg (for other reasons.)

I have all my domains at 123-reg. Had no problems at all.

That's what i thought, however i usually just buy .com and .net domains.

I wanted a .co.uk and knew 123-reg + 1and1 were cheapest so I went with 1and1.

Yeah, but it's the only thing I can think of. I think when you first set up your account you can point it to where ever you want, but (and this is pure speculation), if you leave it pointing at the default 1&1 DNSs, you may then have to wait a little while in order for the DNSs to be updated before changing it again.

This is purely guessing though.

I didn't have an option to change them though

t0mm, any of these applicable?

I cannot edit DNS Settings. Why?

The following are the reasons for not being able to edit DNS Settings:

1. Your domain may be assigned to WebsiteBuilder or WebsiteCreator. To disable it,

In WebsiteBuilder:
Click 'Applications' -> 'WebsiteBuilder' and then click on the 'Settings' button for the
Website in the list which has the assigned domain you wish to activate FrontPage
for. In the drop down list alongside 'Put website online at', choose '-none
selected-' and click 'Ok'.

In WebsiteCreator:
Click 'Applications' -> 'WebsiteCreator' and then click on 'Assign Domain' and select
'None (Unassign WSC)' from the drop down menu. Click 'Submit'.

2. Your domain may be assigned to in2Site Live Dialogue. To disable it, click on 'Applications' -> 'in2site Live Dialogue'. Click 'Edit'. Select another domain or choose '-please select-' to not assign any domain to in2Site Live Dialogue.

3. There may be a Domain Setup Error. Contact 1&1 Support.

4. DNS Management is dependent on the features of the package and is available with all current domain packages advertised on the 1&1 website.

Older domain packages may not have full DNS management. Upgrade to the latest version to access this feature.

Please contact 1&1 Technical support if you are unable to determine if your package supports DNS management.

Most of mine are with 123-reg - and always recommended them until now.

But not bothering to register with Nominet leaving me without my domain is a pretty monumental c*ck up dont you think?

Seems pretty stupid not to allow you to change the nameserver, when its clear you havent taken a hosting package with them!

He he. They dont tell you WHEN they will allow you to do it!

This should work:
faq.oneandone.co.uk/dom…tml

That is how I control it on my domains anyway.

I remember having similar issues in the past, I think its definitely related to a DNS Transfer time. They don't like you messing with the Nameserver until its fully functional and that can take up to 48 hours, but usually a little faster. This usually happens every time you change something in there, it changes it to unmodifiable and you have to wait for it to be unlocked. I think I did contact support about it as well, but I was told to wait hehe

Original Poster

I spose i'll just have to wait it out.

I think it only happens when the DNS bit is changed, not when the Nameserver bit is changed. But because yours is a new domain, it will have had its DNS set also. So 48 hours is the maximum it will take until everything becomes fully working, but every time you change the DNS that will happen. It locks you out until the changes are fully functional.

That is my understanding of it anyway.

What pops up when you run the DNS check from 'DNS Settings' page?

Mine reports;

Name server 1 ns60.1and1.co.ukName server 2 ns59.1and1.co.ukMail … Name server 1 ns60.1and1.co.ukName server 2 ns59.1and1.co.ukMail server 1 mx00.1and1.co.uk, 10Mail server 2 mx01.1and1.co.uk, 10

Original Poster

It's a bit annoying considering i had to wait 11 hours for my account to be set up when it said on the final page it'd be up within the hour.

Once it gets all cylinders firing you will be happy hehe.

Can you modify any of the other settings, or is it locking you out of everything? (Can you edit the A-Record specifically?)

Original Poster

I can edit the A-record and mail servers

You may be able to use the A-Record then for the time being seeing as you cannot access the Nameservers yet. Are you wanting to post it at a parking page or something?

Original Poster

Nope, a web hosting account so i can make a website.

Have you got a link to them so I can check out their FAQ?

You should be able to forward using A-Record you see, it should be mentioned somewhere.

Original Poster

uh www.1and1.co.uk

You said you was using a different host earlier?

Original Poster

oh the host? well at the moment i'm using www.000webhost.com waiting for an account with www.skynethosting.net to be set up

Original Poster

okay my skynet one is up so cancel the help with 000

In 1and1 you can try and set-up a custom A-Record to point to "64.235.54.104". Same page as changing the Nameserver you was on earlier. This should in theory work the same way as using the Nameserver setting would, just without the wait. Hopefully.

Got that email too, but thankfully it was sent in error.

Tom, in the meantime, can you not point it to your host index folder the site will be located? I know you can do this with Dreamhost.
