2.5 External Drive / Caddy Help Please

    Hi All

Took a hard drive out of a laptop, and bought a 2.5 caddy thing.

First time I used one of these, I connect via USB, the light comes on the caddy, and I was expecting an external drive to appear under my computer but this is not the case.

Is it supposed to be plug in, and go? Or do I need drivers for these things etc?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Caddy is dodgy. I have the exact same problem, I stick the USB cable in and the drive lights up, but PC doesn't find it due to the USB connection being faulty, so I have to spend minutes getting it into perfect position.

Argh damn, bought it off here a long time ago, and only just got round to using it. Any chance it could be anything else though?

Did anything istall at all, did the 'found new hardware' icon appear?
Is the Hard drive actually functioning, this would occur if the drive was dead.

Sometimes the little USB icon comes up, nothing installs. 9/10 nothing happens.

    Thanks

If you're sure that you've fitted the hard drive into the caddy correctly, then it should be plug and play, either the caddy is faulty, the usb port is faulty, or the hard drive is faulty.

Thanks for that. There's only one way of fitting so I guess there's a fault somewhere.

    Cheers, repped both of you.

Don't know what to do with it now!

if you have another hard drive lying around, or in another laptop, give that one a try in the caddy, if it works then you know the first hard drive is dead.

Yup, trouble is, I have no other hard drives, nor caddys :-(

    Dead end for me.

    Thanks though

If the hard drive was working ok, double check you connected it in the caddy correctly.

If you have a double ended usb cable for the caddy, plug both into the usb sockets of the computer,
had this issue myself with a 2.5 caddy. Doesn't work with single usb but does with both plugged in.

1 usb in caddy, 2 usb's in computer.

Only other thing I can think of is the format of the drive may be incorrect.

    Hope it helps

Oh wow thank you very much. I remember it coming with a double ended usb, but I had used a single one as I had loads knocking about, but the double one works!

    Thanks a bunch! repped:thumbsup:
