50th birthday gift ideas for sister, low budget so be creative, nothing twee.

hi its my sisters 50th in a few months, and i really need to think of a gift for her. i live on benefits so it has to be low budget. we arent that close so have no ideas. she is classy and i am more basic, so struggle thinking of things. It has to be postable as well as she doesnt live close. Looking for nice ideas, even something crafty. doesnt do ornaments either, please am going mad with worry about it. would love something with a little edge to it.

shes between houses so difficult to think, usually buy her something housey decorative. by 50 we kinda run out of ideas, done all the candles, mirrors, pens, prints, perfume, scarf, sort of thing, sensitive to lots of products so unless could find something really eco warrier cant do that.

A nice poem handwritten or printed on thick paper and framed?

that would be nice, not much of a scribe, saw songs on auction site but they £70, couldnt afford that in a fit, esp have 4 family birthdays in total in 10days.typical. scary.

yes, but all housey and she hasnt house at minute, likes opera, and fine dining but cant think of anything i could afford that she would appreciate. esp as i hate it personally.

aha, thats what they are, never heard of them, need one for myself with all these presents to buy. lol

I very much like the personalised idea.. i guess something crafty may be better. she is vegetarian so that sort of thing does appeal to her.
getting warmer now. really gives me something to sleep on. gonna be long night. thanks all you guys.

    hi,
you said you are quite creative, any good at painting?
I recently did a painting on canvas for a friends birthday of her and her husband on there wedding day which i found on facebook.
It was done using only 3 colours so kind of pop artyish.
Even if you are not great at painting you can get a photo and just paint it in a few colours, there are programs such as GIMP, where you can simplify it and then just draw it onto canvas and just fill it in - paint by numbers kind of thing.
    Its quite satisfying and cheap.
If i knew how to put up pics i'd show you and example.
Could do anything from people to flowers.

    Good luck
    Hope this helps

    History of La Scala?
    CDs of Katherine Jenkins?
    Puccini?

A bottle or two of some snobby wine like St Emilion Grand Cru?
Book of what vintages to buy this year?

Bill Bryson travel guides to somewhere?

Book/DVD - French cuisine cookery course?

any ideas where might get a craft, hand made brooch or something maybe. heard of american website but thats not much use, too soon mid june for that. maybe some brains know something like that.

something more personal rather than something for the house...

    a silver locket
    a brooch
    a bed jacket

    something along those lines.

i like that idea, yes but i know she is allergic to things which arent gold or silver metals. wonder if there are any unusual maybe wooden brooches or something handy.

have looked at some of the personalised things but they mostly repetitive and nothing really crafty about them. no doubt a search would bring me 50million sites, so no idea how to search.

Wooden sounds fantastic, I think thats a lovely idea. Hubby and I have identical wooden rings as his father was a carver.

yes thats exactly the kind of thing i was thinking of. you are so lucky to have such unique rings. like to support craft people as they put so much love into things. thanks for finding that. could give her something like that from my kids and get something else to add to it to make it up a bit more. thanks

How about a grow your own mushrooms kit?

A nice silk scarf, that's classy and needn't be dear, they have them really cheap in the catalogue shop if you have one near.

If I wanted something like that I'd go down to Covent Garden and find something at one of the nice craft stalls there. Do you have any nice craft markets anywhere near you?
