5.1 Surround sound - help needed with my X-Box 360 and HDTV!

    I need help!!!

I have a Sony Bravia HDTV that has HDMI, I also have a HDMI 360 Elite, Virgin Cable Box and have just purchased a Panasonic SC-PT150 DVD Home Theatre Sound System 5.1.

I have set it up with scart connections so I can hear the sound coming out when Cable TV is on, but does anyone know how I get surround sound working for my 360?!!!

Has the 360 got an optical out? You could use that to send 5.1 audio.

it should work via the TV one, my 360 isnt connected to the surround sound but works when the TV option is selected on the surround

Need to check about the optical out, I know there's an optical socket on the TV.

king261 I have had to select an option in the sound menu on the TV for external audio decice, so there is no sound coming out of the TV when I use my 360 only when I have cable on?!

    This could get really complicated.............

Surround sound is output via HDMI but I'm not sure if your TV will output this via its optical out (or does your surround sound have a HDMI connection to the TV?) In other words whether xbox to TV to surround sound system will work?

The way I have mine setup - I use the optical out from the Xbox connected to my surround sound system. I have an HDMI xbox but use the optical out from the vga output. I think with the Elite you get with it a special dongle so you use the dongle in the vga output for optical surround sound AND the hdmi for the display. You would need to confirm that your surround sound system has optical input.

Have a look at post 4 here

This shows a picture of the dongle - you may need to buy an optical cable though.

Sounds good, thanks for your help and the link, was expecting to have to buy something extra as nothing is ever straight forward!

I think I may have one of these actually that came with the elite! Will I need to get an optical cable, or will the 2 X RCA carry 5.1 sound?

I believe the 2xRCA connections will not carry 5.1 sound. They will carry stereo sound which your surround sound system will convert to surround but it will not be true 5.1 sound. You can get an optical cable from places like ebuyer/maplins but check your surround sound has optical input (most good brands like yours, do). I think they were about £12 when I last looked which seems a bit pricey!!

The dongle connects to the AV port and you connect the optical cable to the optical port on the dongle. All you are using the AV port for is as an additional output for the sound. Video will go via the HDMI as does the sound so you can still get sound from your telly if you haven't got your surround sound switched on.

Surround sound on the xbox is great but with a couple of young kids I have to use surround sound headphones in the evening!! Not as good as speakers......

Thanks for this, I have a 3 year old and Mrs has a bun in the oven, so my time with 360 is set to decline even further, but a pair of suround sound headphones might not be a bad investment. Got any recommendations?

I use mine every night and took a real long look at the different ones available. If you are happy with stereo then there are plenty of options. If you want surround sound then options are more limited especially if you want ones which accept an optical input.

Sharkoons/Triton are a headphone which take an optical input and have 3 or 4 tiny speakers in each ear piece and have microphone built-in. Typically these are around £80.

There are some links in this thread

In the end I decided I was going to go for was the some Sony ones (MDR-DS3000 )
    amazon.co.uk/Son…e_1
but they are pricey £130 although Play.com had them reduced but stumbled across a good deal for some Philips ones which are now discontinued. The advantage of both and these (and the Sharkoons) is that you can also use them for DVD viewing.

The Phillips ones I have are supposed to be one of the best headphones for surround sound but tbh I'm not sure I can tell that much difference between stereo and surround. A much cheaper option is just to plug a decent set of corded headphones into your surround sound system.

If you let me know which 'phones you're interested in I'll post some prices on here.

Once your 3 year old gets a little bit older - I recommend Lego Star Wars!! My son (just turned 6) loves it and would play it all weekend but we limit him to 1 or 2 hours a week (if he's been good). Hope all goes well with the bun......

PS some of the 'phones mentioned above may come with an optical cable
