i don't have buildings insurance on some of my properties but that is because i am affluent enough to self insure.
if you don't have enough to self insure, it is advisable to insure your buildings. trust me, i am a risk analyst.

Why is content insurance not necessary? If I was burgled, and all my possessions taken I would need contents insurance, nobody ells is going to give me my stuff back

How does Sainsburys fare with dafaqto?

Its better to have a more helpful, higher rated insurer, even if its more money.

as a risk analyst, i analyse risk. and contents insurance as value for money is not good value, unlike buildings insurance.

it is always cheaper if you can self insure as you get to keep the money if an event does not happen, not so if you pay an insurance premium, the insurer gets to keep the money. i probably shouldn't be saying this as i work in the insurance industry.

if some one burgles your home, they will only take things they can sell and that are easily taken as most thieves are opportunists so they come in and take things and run off quickly. this means that they are unlikely to empty your whole house of its contents.

they will not want furniture, white goods, clothes etc. electronics are what they want and these are pretty cheap second hand so if you had to replace like for like, you can easily self insure and pay for the unlikely event that this happens with the premiums you put aside each year to self insure.

That's a more sensible response. I was going to say something stupid like get a controlled burglar alarm or move to a better area

invest money in an alarm if you are concerned about burglary. this money would be better spent this way than pay for annual contents insurance which does not act as a deterent at all.

I don't see how anyone can say contents is a waste of money.

What would you do if your house burnt down? If it flooded?

Mutley1 what happens if your burglar decides to leave a present I.d prefer an insurer to get someone in to deal with it
for the small amount of money you can pay for contents
Ten years ago I paid about £15-20 a month for contents, now it's about the same for buildings and contents combined..

And for us homeowners with mortgages you must have buildings insurance

Agree with the self insure of items for taking away from home, as the premiums sky rocket when you add valuables outside the home

replace yourself because if you got flooded the premiums would be increased to a rediculous level that you would never get decent insurance again.

the probability of your house burning down or get flooded is the same whether it be contents or buildings. for buildings the insurer has to pay you many many times more than contents but the premiums for contents is more than buildings insurance.

this means that the premiums you pay for contents insurance is mainly high due to the burglary risk.

you seem to have very generous burglers that leave presents? i have never been so lucky. oO

I used Quidco for my insurance through Sainsburys in March/April time, they still haven't paid out, but this is normal they reckon so don't do it if you're in a hurry for the money back.

this is the danger with insurance through cashback. not sure how likely they are to pay.
i did cashback opening a bank account with the halifax, they never paid.
finance contracts are not very good at paying cashback.

Some really STUPID and idiotic comments here.

Some of you are saying that home insurance is a total waste and if something happened, ju?st to pay for it all over again. You're the stupid ones.

If your house and contents were ruined in a fire, where you going to find 100k? It'd be more beneficial to spend £200+ on a policy that would pay for all this if it happened.

Sure, if you don't claim it is a waste, however you pay for peace of mind.

My mind is very peaceful and I don't pay any insurance

Always had insurance. My premiums are very low as well but good cover. Have made 2 claims and when insurance was due for renewal shopped around via comparison sites and premiums have either went down or remained the same. Small price for huge peace of mind - would ESPECIALLY not cut corners by not having buildings insurance oO

So if my house burned down I would then need to go find bricks and build it back up myself because I wouldnt pay my insurance hmmmm

I'm not calling anyone in particular a troll, but you're both as bad as each other arguing like children.

Have opinions, and respect each others or debate them in a mature way, and if you can't agree, then just leave it be.

The same old arguments don.t need insurance, don.t need to work..

What about car insurance do we need that.. Legally yes that's why the vast majority have car insurance..

My mate is a financial advisor and the amount of parents who have no life cover and don.t want it, they.d rather smoke there packet of fags a day than put a fiver down every week to help out the mother/father and the kids financially if they die

Ps what's god got to do with insurance .. Oh yes an 'act of god'

if anyone wants peace of mind then yes by all means take out insurance.
peace of mind is often invaluable.
however, if anyone wants to take a calculated risk that they can afford, then skip home contents insurance.

I.m sure most people take calculated risk I.d agree do not over insure but at the same time don.t under insure u need a happy medium

My brother is a firefighter and the amount of times he has told us that the people who have had their homes burned to the ground............had no insurance. Just crazy.
