    A Different Argument About Pronunciation

This isn't a question about what is right or wrong, this is the answer.

The letter "H" is pronounced "Aych", NOT "Haych".

It's one of the most annoying things in the word hearing people say Haych.

Doesn't it depend on your religion! It does if you come from Norther Ireland.... believe it or not!

Well if that's "the answer" then there's no point discussing it

Only Irish and Indian English people use it as "Haych" according to Wikipedia, so anyone not Irish or Indian who says "Haych" should be shot.

Well i'm from Newcastle which is the most northern main city in England and I'd say about 95% of people up here say "Aych", it's the minority of 5% who say "Haych" which bug me.

Scottish people say Haych, so are you going to shoot me?

You wouldn't get on with my Dad then ;-) - he drops the aitch from all the words where it should be pronounced and adds an haitch to words like honour and heir and, of course, as an eastender pronounces aitch as haitch.:)

hmm never knew that i always said haych

Damn right, someone get my gun!

JK, This applies to English people only. If a whole country says it that way, then that's the right way of saying it in that country.

Just to clarify, though it does bug me to hear someone say it WRONGLY.......that's WRONGLY.......i'm only bringing it up because i'm bored. I'm not really that passionate about it.

See Scots are allowed to say haitch and even spell it as haych if they want - so I can't see why some English can't copy them :-D
