    A little PC help please!

The 'Sleep' mode on my PC appears to have stopped working as of yesterday! Worked fine for the last 4.5 years or so - then yesterday, setting the sleep mode appears as if going to sleep - with the normal messages etc, but on waking it does a full restart instead?

I've checked power management - all ok, done virus/malware scans - all ok, checked logs for anything odd happening yesterday - all ok, tried to do a restore - failed

Oh and 'Hibernate' still works fine?!

It's not a new PC by any means! - P4 single core 3.0ghz Asus P5 ND2 SLI mobo.

I don't know why, but something is pointing me towards a power supply issue - anyone else any ideas?

    Much obliged!

try a system restore back a week or so

Was it updating via Windows Update set to run automatically.

Recently I have noticed a lot of "updating 1,2,3 of 3 system updates" booting and rebooting.

    Perhaps it was a coincidence?

    Is it still happening?

The link below seems to show a USB device needs unplugging before sleep mode is used.

I notice at least one Asus mentioned on the forum there.

Here is one suggestion from there

To prevent a USB mouse from waking your PC

    1. Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Device Manager.

    2. In the list of device categories, expand Mice and other pointing devices.

    3. Right-click the entry for the USB mouse, and then click Properties.

    4. On the Power Management tab, clear the Allow this device to wake the computer check box.

    5. Click OK.

Don't forget to do this with your mouse + keyboard !

    To wake up:

You wake it back up by pushing the power button on your PC. Once you get this working, you will rarely need to do a full shutdown and restart, so your PC should wake up in a matter of seconds and be ready to use.

It's xp sp3, has been fine until yesterday, no software update or hardware changes- it has just stopped working! Will look into the usb thing- but don't know why it only started yesterday?

Another possibility is that if you have insufficient disk space, going into
standby is aborted because of lack of room to store
    memory image.

also, turn off the energy option, by right click desktop, then click proprieties. go to screensaver, then energy, disable all and check if it works.

also check your page file settings? Right-click my computer => properties => advanced => settings under performances => advanced => change. Check that the max size for the page file is equal or bigger than the amount of RAM you have.

s3 standby doesn't use disk space, that's hibernate which the op says is working fine, as mentioned maybe an automatic update, either windows or another program, try system restore to a few days ago.
as you said could be hardware, either psu or mem but could also be a fault with power control on mainboard, hard to tell at mo.

also in relation to mateypeeps post wouldn't really bother as it sounds nothing like your problem and may confuse the issue more

Okies - checked page file and free memory and powersave settings - all as they should be.
checked usb linky - my problem is not sending it to sleep -it's with restarting instead of waking, and it's XP not Vista.
Just following up info non an Adobe update - adobearm.exe
will keep you guys up to date

    WHOOOOP!
Seem to have got it sorted!!

I had a route around inside the PC- checked everything was secure - seemed ok - reconnected up then it wouldn't even switch on - power on button didn't do anything even though there was definately power inside the case. reopened again- rechecked all jumpers, and particularly connections ogoing to front panel of case, then wondered what would happen if i discoonected the power cable for the front of the case that was connected to the middle of the mobo (i know - i iz proper technical innit!) and reconnected it to another spare plug.

Fingers crossed - all seems to work, sleep back to sleeping (and waking) as it should and i've even got power to the LED temperature display on the front of the case which has never worked before!
Big thank you to everyone for their comments - i'm now wondering if i've still got a power supply (or mobo) problem and whether or not this is just a quick fix?

fix is a fix, bit bizarre that connector issue sfunny it didn't seem to affect anything previously? so could be the start or end of a mb power line issue if its a similar panel to mine it will have a power and reset button that require a little power hopefully thats it.

even if it does go properly now - at least i'll know that it's not some weird software update/issue - i've had this set up for 4.5 years now and have been hankering for a new one anyway!

    Again - thanks for helping!

Dang! Full shutdown again this morning instead of sleep, and while off the light in the mouse was flickering on and off too.
I'll swap the mouse later, dying power supply?
