.... and I hark back to my golden age. At least in the 70s and 80s some bands seemed to have some credibility IE: Led Zep, Pink Floyd, U2 (before they went soft).

Will the current generation be saying in 20 years 'Do you remember when we had Camp Rock and High School Musical, those were the days'?

Feel free to 'bash the old foggie'.

Surge Knight.

My 3 year old loves High school musical and even sings the songs,

I agree, in recent months I've also gained a fascination for artists such as Manfred Mann, Supertramp and Nazareth.

Listen to plenty of new music too but now I search for amazing music across all decades.

I agree OP. The artists nowadays don't seem to have any potential for longevity & they all seem too manufactured.

This is due to the celebrity & commercial side of things being more lucrative & important than the quality of the music I reckon.

I love Led Zep, The Who, Jethro Tull, Boston.......another old fogie here

I aggree - My 29 year old husband & I (23) were listening to radio 1 today and saying how rubbish the music is at the min - you get the classics on local radio so they're much better!!

Disagree, Theirs some fantastic music out there, you just have to look abit harder.

Have you only just noticed ? !!

Music has been a shambling corpse waiting to be put out of it's misery for at least a decade :-D

Oasis are the best band since the Bealtes and Stones

motorhead are on tour again later this year ...mosh pit anyone ?

As someone who worked 17 years in the music business I agree with what you say-this is down to a few factors.Record companies have no interest in longevity-only what makes the latest buck for them-the people at the top of these conglomorates know plenty about clever marketing but absolutely nothing about music.

over the years the acts that have come and gone, sunk without a trace who were hugely talented are numerous.

everything has to be pigeonholed these days-"what genre is your music-indie,pop,rock"-why does it have to fit into a neat little bracket?

music buyers are just so fickle nowadays they are very hard to please so bands come and go all the time-hailed as the greatest thing on earth(scissor sisters anyone?-where are they now?) and then replaced with the latest trend(lady gaga-who? first album will sell-then endgame)

I followed springsteens born in the usa tour all over europe and saw true fan devotion for a hugely talented man who can still play a 4 hour gig just cos he enjoys it all so much while britney spiers comes onstage and mimes to backing tracks.

I would say the vast majority of new acts are only vaguely talented with very very few exceptions-I have an enormous music collection but off the top of my head I think the only album I bought by a "recent" artist last year was kings of leons "only by the night"

floyd live are genius-they lit up live8 and made even u2 on that day look ordinary-the last great music act discovered in britain was the night alan mcgee went to king tuts in glasgow and saw oasis-the rest is just so much manufactured garbage.

so count me in the old fogeys club-springsteen,neil young, floyd, genesis and even jethro tull can still wipe the floor with any of todays acts.

oh,and u2 gone soft? thats because bono now believes he is christ reincarnated and sadly he is so globally huge nobody close to him has the guts to tell him he isnt. still a great live act tho btw.

My favourite is Holland/Mt. Vernon & Fairway. What a weird album! I also have a Brian Wilson signed copy of Pet Sounds on high-res DVDA.
