Can I warn people against using this for deals/transactions unless it's a well known member with plenty feedback (even then you're putting yourself at risk)

Regards to this thread:

Is it really worth saving a few pennies when it comes with the risk of not being able to open a dispute if something goes wrong?

thanks, Ben

As i said in the other thread, the system works pretty well when people follow the rules

what happened to that other thread?

I think a wiser idea if buying something on here is to pay an extra £ to cover PayPal fee's and send it as a normal payment. Think that's what I would be doing after reading the other thread.

i know it won't totally cover you, but it might help.

Funny you two should say that because I raised a dispute on paypal regarding Eckofan and I got a refund from Paypal. So you're both wrong. Thank god I didn't use paypal Gift

Same here, I got a refund this morning of £35.
I made eckofan send me an invoice detailing exactly what he/she was intending to sell. Never turned up so I opened a dispute, they never replied so I got a refund.

Looks like we are best avoiding gift then unless it's a well known member with plenty positive feedback

Ressurection!

After people have been left without their money or games on] this thread

I really can't stress avoiding using paypal gift enough! If the other trader has pretty high feedback, you have all the details (address, phone number, email address, etc) then it's probably safe to use but if you have even the slightest doubt then DO NOT USE IT!

You're not guranteed to get your money back from making a claim/dispute via paypal but you stand some chance compared to the zero chance of getting your money back if you pay via paypal gift!

I completely agree, I think this should be made clearer in the rules. While the protection is far from guaranteed it's still more than nothing.

or to stop certain posters running around yelling scare stories.....

yes it can all go wrong, but you are not guaranteed to get anything back even via normal paypal.

Paypal gift is the same as handing over cash to a stranger. However, thats where feedback comes in. If you trust someone, use paypal gift, if you don't - don't complete the transaction full stop.

Its that simple.

Paypal gift is good because you save on paypal fees. You are not protected, but then 1) you aren't even with a normal paypal transaction and 2) if you dont trust a seller you shouldnt be dealing anyway.

1) You ARE protected on a normal paypal payment outside of Ebay.
2) Totally agree.

If you don't trust someone don't complete, however you are better paying … If you don't trust someone don't complete, however you are better paying by normal payapl rather than gift if you really want to go ahead. Gift = no protection. Off ebay you are covered by BUYER COMPLAINT. On ebay it is BUYER PROTECTION which is a guaranteed refund.Off ebay you will get a refund if the seller has funds or if they add them in the future as some people above have done, so you do have some form of cover, look up the buyer complaint policy, compared to zero cover if you pay by gift.

come on tinks... that is so rare its silly. Scammers don't tend to leave money lying around! Thats all I meant.

For me, the fees are worthless.

Oh my word, the irony. I was just googling for refunds with paypal gift, and this is one of the first results, and the OP is the one I'm looking to get a refund from.
