    Accepting Card Payments

    Hi,
I was wondering whether anyone knows that if a business accepts cards over the phone is there no protection for them whatsoever?

    Thanks

Protection for the business? Mail order companies tend to only deliver to the card holders registered address, this cuts out all but the most sophisticated fraudsters.

Chargeback protection (in case of unauthorised card use) will depend on on how much you pay the card processor.

Thanks for the reply, I mean protection as in if I was a takeaway and accepted cards over the phone for delivery would payment be 100% guaranteed because I am unsure whether you need to or can check for registered address, have never been asked this over the phone before for food delivery that is.

I hope I am making a bit of sense!

My local Dominos Pizza asks for the physical card to be handed to the delivery driver, who then makes an imprint of the card onto the back of the card receipt. The driver will refuse to hand over the pizza until he has done that.

Give BMS a call, tell them you are interested in renting a PDQ machine and would like them to answer a few questions first: 0800 61 61 61

Sorry stupid question who are BMS?

Apologies, my mistake... me and my Acronyms.

    BMS = Barclays Merchant Services

my business uses streamline, and the phrase you're looking for is "card holder not present" transaction. Basically, you need to give extra security details in order to process the payment over the phone.

    Card number
    expiry date
security number (3 digits on back of card)
numbers in your postcode ne13 7pt so, the numbers 137.
    house door number.

    hope this helps you

Brillangel is right when he/she said that food take aways don't ask for the registered address and tend to delivery to any address specified by the caller.

The BMS PDQ works in the same way as yours and will simply spit out a "correct" or "false" reply.
Leaving the decision on whether or not to accept the transaction up to the user.

I didn't know that they have a function for numbers in postcode and house numbers! Are you with NatWest then? If you dont mind me asking what are the rates like for your service? Thanks. Also with providing the extra details do you receive more protection but still not the full protection you would have with chip & pin?

I am with natwest, but it is streamline who offer the service. I get charged 60p per debit payment, regardless of amount. But with credit card it works out at 3.75%, so, £3.75 in every £100. However, there are no charges on a business account from natwest for accepting card payments.

If no payments are taken by card, i still get charged a rental fee for the terminal of £5 per month. And if i remember correctly, you have to take out a 3 yr contract, with an initial setup fee of approx £250.

    Regards

Thanks for the info we are banking with Natwest at the moment and my account manager came in and offered this service but it was at £250 setup fees and rental fee for the terminal of £19 per month and also free business banking for a year. So I looked into HSBC and their rates seems cheaper but not a lot of information on their website and I don't have time to go into their branch at the moment!

My local Dominoes dont bother if i have paid by card i have paid, they just hand over the pizza and thats it. Never heard of them taking an imprint of the card, maybe ours isnt upto date with everything yet lol

Dominos have been doing this for years, also Pizza Hut and Pizza GoGo don't bother with it, they do ask to be shown relevant card so.
