Accessing mobile phone network using wifi

Does anyone know how to use the wifi on your phone to access the mobile phone network?

I'm not sure if this is available on O2 and with my 5530 XpressMusic phone but thought it might be worth a go as I'm experiencing a network outage at the moment. The service which I know is available on Orange is called UCMS or something and was implemented because coverage indoors can be poor.

I don't think you can. Wifi is usually tcp/ip, and phone calls, text, etc. use gsm or umts. Different types of network.
Maybe you can use wifi to connect to a wifi network and then register for a voip service? But this will be a service other than O2.

I remember reading on the Orange help pages that you can enable UMTS (it might have been) on your handset to basically use the wi-fi to access the mobile phone network.

I have used fring for VOIP but I'm talking about sending and receiving text (SMS) messages and the like using wi-fi.

UMTS is just another name for 3G and has nothing to do with wifi, I'm … UMTS is just another name for 3G and has nothing to do with wifi, I'm pretty sure this doesn't exist, I've never heard of it and know quite a bit about technology.

Not sure if it was UMTS but it was 4 letters and started with U lol If I ever find it again I'll post it here.

Yeah not umts bud , it's UMA, and from what i believe no the 5530 doesnt have uma.

your thinking of somehtign similar to the vodafone VAG thing, like a mobile phone route giving 3G access to vodafone network using your internet line, at least i think you are... anyway one of the thignys are fairly expensive but once you got it is amazing apparantly for poor coverage areas, i cant vouch for it though as i dont have one as i get normal 3G where i live
