ACS Law & speculative invoicing for alledged copyright infringers

It's not much different to the Private Parking Charges (they threaten court, bad credit record - but if you ignore them more often than not it never happens). Only difference is there is actually no arrangement with the copyright holder and ACS law keeps all the money.

out of interest do they try and prosecute the downloader or the person that uploads the stuff in the first place for others to view for free?

Torrenters do both and are easy targets.

the reason i asked was i download a lot of music videos off youtube and was wondering what if they started issuing fines for stuff i've watched via the tube, i would owe a bloody fortune.

    You're safe!

ACS Law only targeted BitTorrent users because their identity is basically public, for all to see. The "industry" is only really going after P2P users and trying to take down other methods (Usenet, etc) at the source.. like NZB search sites. Rapidshare/Megaupload search sites will be next, but they're having their American counterparts issue DMCA cease and desist notices for now.

my friend has been harrassed by these people alledging she downloaded a gay porn movie. Been going on for months. Recently received a letter saying the legal firm had changed and all correspondence to the new firm.

    Boyfriend in the closet?
Open wifi with neighbour who was curious?

there must be a nice default letter articulating how IP evidence is utterly useless to these people

Well, tell your friend not to worry 'cos these crooks are out of business. The furthest they ever went was summoning people to court, but never actually going through with the case. Scare tactics and bullying.. glad they're gone.
