Adding a box to a basic NTL setup

My sister-in-law has a basic NTL era phone and cable TV package. I have an old NTL box, is it possible to take an extra feed and use the box in a bedroom as a Freeviw box? I know ages ago when we got rid of Cable in my old house but kept the NTL phoneline the box just functioned as a Freeview box which would be handy for her as shes in a bad Freeview signal area. If so what sort of cabling would we need to run from the junction box? or could it be looped out the back of the other NTL box?

    Any advice much appreciated.

It's very simple to do, you just need a splitter and cable. I have done that to my setup. You can either split it at the box or just before it goes into the TV.
I'll find an ebay number that shows everything you need.

you would need a splitter and some coax cablle. as ofr the box functioning as a freeview box i dont think you will be able to view he freeview channels. all you will be able to do is watch bbc1 and 2 as well as bbc news. ne e4 or anything. unless you was to modify the box, then you can get everything.

This is the kind of thing you will need:

I'm not recommending the seller, I'm just giving you an idea of what you need.

dinosteveus - can I just clarify where you are saying to split the signal? Looking at that cable it would be where the cable comes from the box it enters the house in, no? or at the end of the cable going into the first NTL box?

we have a box on the inside and have split it off that lead .

In my house I have a NTL Cable box that originally had a two way splitter, as per the picture. One feed went to my Broadband Modem thingy and the other feed went to my NTL TV Box thingy.
I have now change the two way splitter for a four way one, one feed goes upstairs, one to the Modem, one to the Lounge and the fourth one is for a project I'm working on.
The feed that goes to the NTL TV Box is split near the TV and that goes into another Digibox thingy I have.
The feed has not degraded by being split so many times.
I'm not sure how NTL/Virgin would feel about my DIYing but I don't see a reason to inform them.

Not if you connect a separate box to each feed. If you connect the feed into the back of your TV you can pick up quite a few extra channels like Living and some other rubbish along with 'normal' TV.

Thanks mate, you've been a great help. So do all the boxes show your standard package? Or does the main one show what you have ordered and the rest some basic channels? Do you happen to know what those basics are? Is C-beebies in there (and the other BBC kids channel whose name eludes me!).

    Cheers:thumbsup:

Resurrecting an old thread, Ive rented a flat for work that I move into next month, its got an NTL/Virgin feed into it - Im going to plug the TV in and see what if anything comes free. Dont watch much TV whilst Im there but will be nice to have BBC at least.

Although Ive read that you now just get a message saying ANalouge has come to an end... and I heard NTL were prosecuting people for using ebay'ed or otherwise box's, no matter what the age!
