    Advice criminal justice system

My mother works in an amusement arcade not far from her home. The place was robbed by fellas with claw hammers and a knife. To cut a long story short CCTV and statements helped catch these 2 scummers (is that a bad word??? mods remove if not allowed) Now she got a letter today saying that it was likely she'd be required in court to give evidence. She's bothered at the fact that obviously the lads and there familes are aware of where my mother works and easily find by following her home on an evening her home address. My mothers bothered by the fact that her life could easily be made difficult by the ****ers and there families. What can be done?

She can decline to give evidence if she feels her personal safety is going to be at risk.

As easy as that? She's terrified and the letter says nothing like that.

Afaik she could still recieve a Subpoena requiring her to give evidence

I think maybe she should speak to victim support or something, If their on cctv then they'll find it hard to defend against the chargers.

Hope they get what they deserve.

    I wish your mum well.

Did the bump on her head she got a day before the trial affect her memory.??????
She must stop walking into doors.

Thanks, she was scared to go back to work but she did. The policeman that was delaing with the case said it was a straight forward case due to the CCTV but they are claiming not guilty and as such my mother is required to give evidence. Whilst I don't want them to get away with it, I'd rather my mother not live in fear of a revenge attack or have to give up work for fear of such.

Is there a number on the letter she can ring to see?

Why should your Mother have to put her personal life and safety at risk? Surely CCTV is good enough evidence? Could she not give an anonymous written statement?

tbh the robbers will no ur mums the 1 giving evidence as they would have seen her when they were robbing the place. Tell your mum to speak to the police about her concerns they will advise her on the best possible way around this.
Is it going to court? if it is then there must be a question in the CCTV, cos if its clear cut them doin it and they should have been told to plead gulity by solictors

Usually you wont be subpoenad if there is other evidence such as CCTV if there is a chance that personal safety is on the line.

When the officer took the statement he should have asked your mum whether she was prepared to give evidence in court. The police have a lot of different methods of making their witnesses feel safe/comfortable giving evidence so her best course of action would be to contact them and express concern and they should be helpful and be able to advise her.

I think we'll look at ringing victim support and the PC that was dealing with the case.

The letter just says "Thieving Toerag has entered a plea of not guilty to the following charge: robbery, the defendant was remanded in custody. This means that a trial will be arranged , and as you are a important witness you will be required to attend court and give evidence at a later date". It then asks for dates my mother ain't available.

Let us know how you get on, would be good to know. I've heard that if your called up to be part of the jury then there's very little that can get you out.

    Not a problem

tell your mum not to worry too much,
A friend told me this probably won't go to trial or at least it will likely be canceled on the day.
many plead not guilty initially because they can change their plea to guilty at the last moment and still get the reduction in sentence allowed for that
meanwhile the conditions for them as remand prisoners are superior to that of convicted.. they are not all stupid it seems..

Tell your mum not to worry.
A MASSIVE/HUGE amount of cases are dealt with behind closed doors at the court offices between barristers with pleas being changed and amended at the last minute.

If she's ordered to go to court to give it and she refuses she can be arrested.

I might need to give evidence against the **** who burgled my house soon.
