Okay, so my Mother has been hinting to me about a tortoise for Xmas. To be quite honest, I haven't got the foggiest of where to begin and I don't know if she has ever had one before, don't really want to prod questions and raise her suspicions. So my question is this;

a) Where can I find good pet shops near Burnley, Lancashire that specialise in reptiles/tortoises.

b) Any tips/help on general caring for tortoises.

All in all, I don't want to spend hundreds of pounds on something that isn't going to be looked after properly.

Even ones that are in captivity? I thought it was just the wild? Shows how much I know :oops:

Pet Tortoises don't hibernate unless you turn the heat off.

Young ones shouldnt be hibernated as they dont have enough body mass to last the long sleep. The tortoise society would be a good place to start for advice and contacts maybe. My friend has bred from his and ours is 4 years old and he hibernates her for us. They need correct looking after and food etc to make sure the shell grows properly. Bit more technical than it used to be. There are several different types and are about £75 upwards in the pet shop near us. I believe Horsfield is the most common. If you need any more help our next door neighbour is a member of the tortoise society and would happily give you more details and/or advice im sure
Bear it in mind that they last for 'ever' and could well be passed to your children before it pops its shell!
