    Advice needed! Laptop won't boot!

I've got a Acer Aspire 5920 bought almost 3 years ago from cdiscount.co.uk, they went bust I think a while ago so I don't think I can use the Sales of Goods Act to get them to repair it free. Anyone know if there's a way round this?

Laptop came with 1 year manufacturers warranty.

    More info on problem:

When pressing the start button, the screen just displays weird colours on the top as if the LCD is faulty. The colours are random and near the top of screen, it's blank everywhere else. Strange thing is I can hear the Windows 7 start-up sound but nothing appears on screen.

Has anything been dropped on the screen?
Sounds like the screen has gone - some screens are easy to replace. It may be a good idea to investigate the cost of a replacement screen - by the way does it have a VGA out port ? if so connect a lead from this to a monitor - do you see the image on the monitor ?

Nothing was dropped on it, no scratches or anything. I don't think I have a VGA cable. The screen I think must be gone...

It could be that the graphics has overheated and gone wrong. Good idea to try it on an external monitor though. That would confirm if it's the screen or onboard graphics that has gone wrong.

Even if the company wasn't bust you'd have a hard time getting anything from them by using the sale of goods act. You'd have to prove that the 3 year old laptop was defective at purchase and not abused, which would be difficult to do.

Strange thing is that it just started working all of a sudden and then next day the problem came back and now it's faulty again!

I took it to a laptop repair shop and they said it was the graphics card, but he may just have been guessing since it again started working whilst he was testing it.

I just opened it and took the red ATI chip out which should be the graphics card, no sign of any damage and gave it a good clean and put it back but still same problem...Is there a way I can get a replacement? If it can so easily slot out there must be a way to get it replaced without having to fork out £200 right?
