why do you need a splitter? I have my ps3 connected via hdmi to my TV that connects via optical to the surround amp.

Isn't the PS3 HDMI? If it is, the sound will be transmitted to your TV via HDMI (which is audio and video) then just use your TV optical out to your 5.1 system?

    That is correct.

HDMI sends both video AND audio along the one cable, you should be fine with one optical cable and no splitters etc

thanks you both for your advice!

If your tv outputs 5.1 digital through an optical out port (rare) then you are lucky and whatever your tv is currently set to will also be output to your surround system.

If however you are like me and you either have no optical out - or your optical output is only stereo then you need one more optical cable than you have devices.

Eg. 360, ps3 and tv out - you will need 4 optical (toslink) cables and the switch box you pictured.

My logitech z660 system also has only 1 optical input making me serious look at a separate av amplifier - it's just that they are so ugly and Big!

the hdmi cable is going to the tv so he wont get 5.1 surround sound

he is correct in saying that he needs the hdmi to tv to send the picture

he must then have someting to his surround sound to get the true 5.1 hence the reason for optical

I would have thought that most newish HDTV's would have 5.1 optical output these days. My LG does.

incorrect unless the TVs optical output is only stereo. HDMI would carry the 5.1 signal from the ps3 and the TV passes this via optical out.

    im confused now!

I have a hdmi from the ps3 to the tv and a hdmi from my Vbox to my tv - i want surround sound to run through both of these, my 5.1 has 1 optical port as does my tv and ps3 - can my tv support surround sound for my ps3 and vbox or do i have to link them all seperately up to the surround sound? (thus needing 2 cabels and a splitter)

let me consult my crystal ball ;-)

what make / model of tv? :-D

i would very much doubt your optical outputs in stereo only as that pretty much ruins what the optical connection is all about....quality. Just get the one optical cable and try that, if you find you only have stereo sound then maybe consider the setup you first mentioned. I don't think you will have problems with the one cable

if your tv has 5.1 optical out then you have no need for all those connections / splitter. Thats the idea of optical out from your TV in the first place.

yea but you still have to get the optical from the tv to the surround sound

the surround sound has only 1 optical so you still have to use a splitter somewhere ( its the surrond sound that feeds all the speakers) i dont use the tv volume at all

anyway im not changing mine as it all works and to be honest i was confused enough in the first place when i was setting up lol

youve got me thinking now and could be right

the sound is fed to the tv through the hdmi cables then the tv sends all the sound ( via optical ) to the surround sound

im sure i read somewhere that the sound through the hdmi is not as good as optical hence the reason for me going the way i set it up

    i could be wrong though?

The surround sound only needs one optical, all you do is connect the tele to the surround sound via optical.
Connect all devices via HDMI to TV
    TA-DA!

I understand you not wanting to change your setup now it is up and running as playing about with wires can get very frustrating

However i wouldn't advise others to go the same route as its unnecessary.

I have the samsung le40m86 and the optical output is only stereo.

The tv only supports an input of stereo through hdmi (according to my ps3) which causes various strange occasional loss of sound when forcing 5.1 digital in.

Then again these tv's have had lots of bad press for various issues. Personally I love it and the picture quality is awesome.

I have to make an apology here as i have done some research and it appears that some television sets do not like to output 5.1 over optical when receiving through HDMI. I would still suggest trying all devices connected to TV then 1 optical to the surround sound first, however you may find that you get stereo only or worse case scenario no audio at all from the surround sound.

An extract from the manual for the LE37A558 (cause it has clearer instructions) states :

    "DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (OPTICAL)
Connect to a Digital Audio Component.
When the HDMI IN jacks are connected, the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (OPTICAL) jack on the TV outputs 2 channel audio only. If you want to hear 5.1 channel audio, connect the Optical jack on the DVD player or Cable/Satellite Box directly to an Amplifier or Home Theater, not the TV."

Which is a bummer because im soon to be buying the tele myself and dont want to have to fart about with that many cables, just seems so unnecessary

The optical link will output in 5.1 but ONLY from the built in freeview. Any connected devices will be forced to send only stereo sound hence your receiver will only output stereo sound.
My apologies for confusing the matter!
