Advice on broadband

I'm currently with talk talk and the connection I seem to always have is 2mb, it says on talktalk's website "upto 8mb" I understand that I wont have exactly 8mb but 2mb still seems low.

I live 6 miles outside Leeds city centre, so it's not like I'm out in a field miles and miles away from the world either.

Is there a service that will 'upgrade' my line from my house to the exchange or is this something I'm just going to have to wait for until BT increase my line speed.

I would like to pay that bit extra and have a faster connection - but there's no point if my telephone line is at it's maximum speed.

Advice please from you kind people. Rep will be left for good advice. thank you.

You need to extract some statistics from your modem or router. That'll very quickly determine if your line is the problem, or if your ISP is just carp.

dont have a solution to your problem (and mine) but the link lets you see how far from exchange you are

I have an 8Mb connection, I also live about 6 miles from exchange, toady i'm getting about 4.4Mb/s here dslreports.com/stest

varies a lot on downloads tho, a file in firefox i might get at over 700Kbs and other files only 50Kbs

Depends how long you've been with Talktalk for. We only got 2mb for the first few months then they upgraded us to 8mb (took them three weeks to upgrade us mind, we lost internet connection and phone for this time). Trouble is Talktalk are not responsible for the phonelines and they get BT Outreach to do the work. I've spoken to a few Outreach engineers and they unofficially confirm that if you're not a BT customer then you go to the back of the queue. :x

just been on samknows.com, got all the info I needed. Thanks for the link. To confirm my thoughts, **** phoneline and 2.7 KM away from an exchange

get a cheaper provider

even if youre getting the same poor connection, at least you pay less
O2 offer as low as £7.5 for its 8MB service
broadband.o2.co.uk/hom…jsp

otherwise go to a different technology i.e. cable braodband

No ADSL2 provider like O2/Be or Bulldog availible either?

1.7 miles isn't that long a distance though, it'd have to be a rather roundabout line to limit you to 2mbps.

The distance checker on all these websites is a VERY approx guess, they have no way of knowing which cable your on from the exchange, for eexample x cable could be 4.5km and Y cable could bge 3.2km as they go different routes to the cab. It's Openreach not Outreach, and the engineers hosuld not of said anything like that, the whole reason we wehere createde was to give every service provider equal access to the network. I'm on a 4km line and I get just short of 6meg, it's all to do with cable length, cable type and cable, poundage.

You may be 11 miles from leeds city centre, but you'll not be fed from Leeds Central exchange, ypu'll be fed from a more local one, ]samknows can help you identify your local exchange. Interleaving: Noise on a line can cause interruptions to data packets. Interleaving is a process that spreads data over a series of packets so that any noise or other factor causing packet loss has less of an overall effect on the data traffic. Interleaving increases latency so can have an adverse affect on onlime gaming. Interleaving is turned on on most ADSL lines by default, and can be turned off at request (usually).

So what your saying is if your having poor online gaming speeds and getting disconnected (always happens on my ps3) then ring your provider up and ask then to turn interleaving off?

Will interleaving effect my line speed?

The modem I am using is a Netgear DG834G

I dont understand those up to 8mb speeds, Im with cable myself, my brothers on talktalk he can never go over 3mb even though it does say 8mb..
Im going to try that interleaving thing for him

1) Stay away from TalkTalk (Worst provider ever)
2) www.samknows.co.uk (enter your postcode and it will tell you how far away from your exchange
3) ISP's say "Upto XXmb" and that is because there service can support upto that speed but your speed is based on your location from the exchange/line quality/ and internal line quality... Extensions, etc/
4) Your speed is usally based on contention from the exchange, maybew 50:1 meaning that 50 people share 1 link and its split, if your lucky you may have a 25:1 contention.

I used to be a Broadband Specialist for BT. if u need anymore advice, pm me.

Right, im with talktalk, and I live 330M from an exchange. They say I get upto 8 meg BB, but at most I always seem to be about 2 meg. Im using the same router as super_leeds btw.

Mine's a larger distance but I'm same 2 mb constantly nothing ever higher.

I do not use automatic DNS I use:
Primary 62.24.199.13
Secondary 62.24.199.23

Could that be a problem?
