Advice on buying a NAS (Network Attached Storage)

I have 3 PCs and one laptop in my house (for the whole family) all connected via a router. I also have an inkjet printer (plugged into one PC) and a network ready laser plugged into the router.

Like many people I have a USB connected hard drive, but I still find myself moving files around a lot from one PC to another for various reasons (for backup, to help the family look at digital pictures or listen to music etc).

I am considering a NAS device, but unsure exactly what to look for in a NAS and what features are important and which aren't.

I see some say they can work with bit torrent clients or itunes, but how does that work exactly?

I will probably want to use it for media streaming (probably mostly music) plus as a backup storage device.

My son has a PS3 if that is important (but not yet network or internet connected).

Does a NAS usually have a user interface (web based?), and if so what features are available on it?

Anyone offer advice, or point me to an idiots guide to NAS?

If you have an old PC kicking around check out FreeNAS.

Streaming - look for DLNA and decent UPnP implementation in router

Buffalo linkstation live 1tb is decent but although it has gigalan it's a waste. as only 10/100 speeds

I have the modern looking linkstation and the older one, works same just looks wise not as nice --- Imo

ebuyer links are being blocked now I see

The newer linkstation live has timer and standby features which the older model doesn't have.

defeats purpose of having one of these with timer and standby

lol, not really you can use the timer so that it switches itself off when you're asleep and then turns itself on in the mornting.

I have the older model and don't like the drive constantly spinning.

yeah I have both and the new one's timer settings suck make no sense and do not work..unit is still on 1.01 firmware well it has been since I bought it. I updated to 1.07 a few minutes ago to fix bit torrent issue maybe that also fixed the timer/ and gave a standby option.
