Advice on Notice period at work

    hi all,
i have just started a new job - its been 2 weeks now. however i am not enjoying it at all and is something that i did not except.
I want to hand in my notice and leave the job immediately as I have other job lined up and can start immediately.
in my contract it says 1 months notice but because i have only been there for 2 weeks - CAN I GIVE A ONE WEEKS NOTICE??

you can equally just not turn up for the next shift, but please do tell them in advance.

go speak to h & r - say the job isnt for you and try and come to arrangement - they might stop your pay otherwise

look at it another way - they could say they dont want you after 3 months - dont feel guilty - just make sure yu dont lose money:thumbsup:

    good luck

There are other factors to consider as well though - but the simple answer is yes.... Your contract will (probably) say that you have a period of time called probation or similar, this can normally bew anywhere from 3 weeks to six months... During that period, both sides are normally mutually acceptant of one weeks notice either way.....

However, as often is the case, where something has cropped up, and you are not enjoying it - or it is not all that it was supposed to be or thought of etc, employers will often want you to go sooner rather than later anyway - not only from an Operational Risk perspective, but also as it is clearly not in anybody's interest to have somebody at work, that clearly isnt enjoying it or doesn't want to be there etc etc.....
Up to you how you do it - you either go and be honest and tell them how you feel, or you simply leave there and then. Reference wise, it isn't going to make much difference, as one you haven;t been there long enuff to claim for one, and two, in the future it wont appear on your CV anyway as it was such a short term role.........

You could always have a lil fun;-)

You are statutory not required in law to give any notice during your first 4 weeks.

An employer is unable to chnage this rule.

That could probably be one of the worst posts I have seen on these boards.

Just walk out of a job?!? Doesnt really make you attractive as an employee. Someone gives you a chance and that is how you repay them?

An employer promises you wages, not to keep you amused.

    Daz1981, why the personal insults?

I think the point magicjay is getting at is once you are establishing a career you can't simply "walk out mid shift" as you have accepted some responsibility and it's your job to get it done. Food needs to be on the table and your professional reputation is at stake.

Most people can't just walk out of one job straight into another just because they are not happy that day.

Good luck with your attitude, especially in the current climate.

Well done to the op for sticking it long enough to find something else and good luck in your new job

firstly you can walk out mid shift even gordon brown could the world is a unhappy place people dont need to put up with it, never work for money work for happiness

currently im self employed and doing great but when i stop enjoying it i'll end it and i get offers all the time but at the moment would never consider working for somebody else again

if you are good you can walk from a job and into another same day and in this climate still no need to be out of work i could walk into numerous jobs tomorrow

i guess some have it and some dont:-D
