**** me! is that whats paid? I was thinking £20 was steep to ask for. suppose im going to be there for at least 2-3 hours a match, gettin my camera exposed to the elements etc so yeh maybe £100 is a fair price per match, but that a lot of bums on seats considering they only get around 250 ppl per match

As a guide two photographers are doing our wedding for £500 from bride and groom getting ready to the 1st dance is about 5-6hrs I guess

well look at it this way. for start weather it is for an hour or more it will take up your whole day. it is not like you can go there for a few hours and then go to another job.
So I would say £50 for you and add on any other expenses such as travel and films needed. If you explain it to them like this then they will see what the £100 is for. So £100 sounds fine.

What sort of equipment are you shooting with? Is it fully weathersealed?

As photography isn't my primary profession I don't need to fund my equipment/life therefore I don't charge much. I frequently find people don't realise how much photography costs especially for a fully weather sealed set up with wide aperture top pro lenses hence they're not prepared to pay that much anyway. Obviously though it's a very general question which is going to vary considerably in different circumstances.

*enters* I think that he's using the camera on his mobile phone, hence the rate.

ok i use nikon D80 with an 80-200mm f2.8. decent enough for the nonleague stuff. id love a 300mm 2.8 but the 2.5k price tag is a bit steep. the weather shields cost around £50 and a decent weather proof bag ton+, but I have the latter although it hasnt been exposed to rain yet.

im just a bit nervous asking for anything over £50 really. i know the old saying "dont ask dont get" but this is a nonleague club. £100 would proably pay a players match fee. by no means am i greedy and I have been doin stuff as freebies to get me the pics to present to clubs to offer my services on a regular basis.

some of my stuff can be found here ]http//bl…net

im sure its a simple answer somewhere!!

Well what about this then, Just say to them "I dont know what your budget is and I would like to do the photography for the team, what kind of budget are you thinking of setting aside for this" or somewhere along the line that shows you want to do this but also lets them tell you what they can afford. You cant go wrong.

cheers i'll craft some lines tomorrow. i know that i shouldnt be bending over, but this little photo project of mine has a long road to take. a few freebies on the way wont hurt, but if im goin to be doing something regular and my weekends are being hit then i need something in return.

I think that approach is quite reasonable and as you have a great portfolio of images which allow the club to see what they're getting. The reason I mention a weather sealed setup is that it's saved me a couple of times as I know the equipment will keep on going despite the conditions and therefore I can be relied upon.

A couple of years back I was shooting a wedding and arranging the equipment the night before, at that point while the lenses were weather sealed I only had one older body which was also weather sealed as the newer ones weren't. As I didn't like the older body and thought the wedding would be mostly indoors I decided to leave it and stick with my newer gear. The next morning although the weather looked fine I changed my mind and took the older body as well just in case which I'm so glad I did...the rain started pouring when the church part finished and the rest of the wedding was outside. I was initially shooting with two of the non-sealed bodies but as the rain increased and the umbrella being carried for me was getting in the way I switched back to the old body and shot the whole afternoon for it. For around three to four hours it was constantly being drenched much to the alarm of many of the guests who assumed I was going to wreck the camera but it never missed a beat and stills works flawlessly today.

Thankfully I now have a newer weathersealed body which has better features so it it's easy choice, I know I can depend on it in bad weather conditions and I also know that while it's still going strong many other people will not be taking pictures at all.

Don't forget you need to factor in public liability insurance, wear and tear on kit, car and you etc, and don't under sell yourself.

I know of someone who does this for Accrington Stanley (who are dey?) I can find out how much he charges to get you a ballpark figure.

Incidently could you not do some kind of sponsorship deal, it may not apply as this isnt your full time job, but I do videography for an American Football club, put it all together edit it and provide DVD's for the coaching staff for training purposes, but I also do a proper menu driven DVD for the players for which I charge £3 (I do it at cost) yes I've massivly undersold myself as this club is now the most media rich in the league, but rather than earning from it our Photography Studio became an official sponsor with our logo appearing on all branding and game shirts, with one of the other sponsors being Rock Radio and one of the Holyoaks cast playing for them its really got our name out there, so much so the chairman of the league phoned me earlier this week and wants me film and prepare a master DVD for the playoff final weekend in spetember (Britains equivalent of the Superbowl) so maybe a sponsorship deal is worth more to you than £50 in your pocket.
