advice please if you are in the medical profession.

Someone I know who is 77 has been advised by the doctor that it is ok to drink approx a bottle(i.e 75cl) of whisky a week. He is approx 5ft5'' (he has shrunk!) and weighs around 11stone 10lb
I have said it seems ridiculous that they would say that-his wife is worried for his health but he tells her that this is what he was told.
I am asking for medical advice not speculation as we have done all the speculating already

thanks will pass that on!!! it is a serious worry though as he has never been able to drink all his life as it made him ill!! he has decided that the tipple does him good but we are not so sure!!
if anyone else has any insight please offer it?

He also has rum in his coffee and if he goes out for a meal he has a pint and a half of bitter(once a week or so:roll::roll:)

    Hi

    I have come across this

    A 75 cl bottle of whisky = 28 units

Apparently for men upto 28 units per week is a sensible amount for men, 21 being safe for women

    Hope that help

Please just leave him alone... let him have his drink....

I would think the Doctor knows more about it then you (no offence)

Its bad enough the government always trying to butt in and enforce what is right for us let him do what he wants.

I am in the medical proffession but on this subject ring AA (not the break down sevice) They are up to date with how many Units. Age, health all come into it. They could advice you

maybe he needs it to dull the pain. I know my nan had cancer and her sis went to docs n docs told her it be crueler to make her give it up

lol or maybe he just enjoys his drink? who cares why he does it, he is old enough to know what he wants and you shouldnt interfere

As a qualified Dr the amount of alcohol an individual can consume before it becomes detrimental depends on several factors ... but all things being equal, excess of anything can be harmful.. If he is fit and well why not... A elderly chap, 106, swears that a glass of whiskey, and several cigarettes each day has kept him alive. so draw your own conclusions

    to him

Yeh he's 77 so let him enjoy it I say.

I think I should clear something up here ... I am not a medical doctor so any views I may have may not be in line with current medical recommendations and proper medical advise should be sought.
