Advice please on connecting wii and ps3 to a single wired router connection

Hi,

Currently have my PS3 connected via cable to a router. Works great. Now have a wii which I also want to connect to this same cable simultaneously.

I just purchased a Wii LAN ADAPTER from ebay for £6 so all I think I now need is a RJ45 one into two connector and two 1m cat5e straight patch cables.

Can anyone confirm if I am correct and what a good search term would be on ebay / dealextreme to find this 2-1 connector?

Thanks

Not possible I'm afraid. You'll need a hub or switch - these are usually 4 port and up. Connect one port to the router and the two consoles another two ports. This should leave you with one free... (xbox 360?)

Here's a 5 port that will do the job - have a look around first though any cheap switch will do it : ebuyer.com/pro…456

Thanks Giles. Will the switch auto switch or does it require manual intervention or can both be used at the same time (very unlikely).

Cheap switches are known as 'unmanaged' and require no setup. Worst case is it might crash if it gets too hot and then it just needs to be unplugged and plugged back in!

This looks ideal as I could use my ps3 usb to power it. What do you think?

oooh - thats a point. I dont want to have to have the ps3 on for the switch to get power as I might just be using the wii.

Thanks but I will only ever have one device on at the same time (either the wii or the ps3 although mainly the ps3 as the wii sits there for months at a time without any use :?).

In that case maybe you should just buy something like … In that case maybe you should just buy something like this:http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.2657Stick that on the end of your existing cable from your router then swap the network cables from your PS3/Wii when required.Or this for neatness, but like I said expect reduced performance and nothing if both the Wii/PS3 attempt to use it at the same time.http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.2685

The second one you posted was exactly what I was getting at in my original post but was put off by Giles saying that this wouldn't work.

Maybe I didnt make it clear that the connection would only be used by one device at a time.

Thanks very much.
