Advice please! What's the best method for a budget emulation retro gaming?

23rd Jan 2022
I have an attic full full of retro games and consoles but I just don't have the time or the inclination to take them out, set them up etc etc.

So I've been toying with the idea of setting up something to scratch my retro gaming itch. What, in your opinion, is the most convenient/cost saving way of setting something up? A stand alone Pandora Box? A budget used PC? Budget Android phone? a current console running an emu? All advice appreciated!

Depends what systems you want to emulate. The Series S is a great option though. You don't need to jailbreak it, just buy a dev account for £15 and install Retroarch.

An Android such as a Huawei Mate 20 Pro is perfect for retro (easily obtainable below £150) for up to some Gamecube games on Dolphin (games like Super Mario Strikers and Mario Kart Double Dash work very well on Dolphin, but not for games like Super Mario Sunshine and Metroid Prime etc). I haven't tried any PS2 emulation on it so can't say if it works well on a Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

I currently emulate Gameboy Color, SNES, N64, PS1, Dreamcast, PSP and Gamecube on the Huawei.

I think you can do it without Dev mode now.

Check out etaprime on YouTube. He tests emulation on cheap phones and tablets and old and new budget pcs.

I've 2 picades, 3 pcs running various software like coin ops, launchbox, retrobat, and a pi zero 2 with gpi case.

Easiest is coinops with an xbox 360 controller, 2nd is virtualmans retrobat, then picades, launchbox is great for creating your own selection of games. Hardest at the moment is the rpi zero2 with gpi case as you have to add and test all the games untl an image comes out.

I guess it depends what you want to emulate up to as to what is best though. I really like virtualmans retrobat for covering a load of systems, but coinops is amazing for arcade only.

For retro emulation you could get an old refurb office pc. You can get one with i3 or i5 CPU and ssd for under £100, they're posted on here all the time. Might need something a bit more substantial if you want to emulate PS3/XB 360 upwards

I'm running zx spectrum games on an a4-5000 cpu and motherboard i picked up for a tenner, and managed to get windows 11 on it.

It will also run the mame 2003 low spec arcade set

But yep op needs to mention what consoles/computers they want to emulate.

Thanks. I might have a look around for my old laptops, I'm sure I have a few in a electronics graveyard somewhere!

    It's mainly games pre PS2.

I bought an emulator called spectaculator a few years back, i think its still available now but they dont upgrade the windows version now although not sure they could do much to improve it. Games load in a few seconds but i believe if you want the full experience it can load games like they originally loaded

I'd love one of these but A, it would be a bit overkill to buy one of these powerhouses to play a few SNES and megadrive games and B, it could hardly be called a 'budget' set up!

oh right lol, planning on playing a different console generation, have you thought about one of those sega mega drive mini's, think a second hand one is around the £100 mark, and you can add other generations,

playstation vita (around £120) is decent for emulation as well, had no problems running megadrive, snes, gba games on it, pretty easy to setup vita.hacks.guide/

nintendo wii is pretty straight forward to setup with emulation and around £40

(just picked the first youtube clips on the search, apologises if they're talking about something else)

could probably find a cheaper pc with like an igpu that will be alright for emulation as well, had no issues running everything up to gamecube on an intel hd 4000 from 2012, ps2 struggled depending on the game

The Wii U is a decent option too, easy to mod, works well and can play handheld (at home) or on TV.

From your comments, you must have an old pc, laptop or console you can use instead of spending upto 200 sheets on something new. Unless you want to?

Just an quick update. So after all comments I ending up going the route of phone emulation. I figured I buy the latest, most powerful, phone every 2 years. I might as well use it. Also, what's more portable/convenient than the phone that's in my pocket all the time!?

The emulators seem to work really smooth and while the on-screen controls are generally awful, I've ordered a Razer Kishi to make it a tad more enjoyable.
