My router died about 10 days ago and I have had real problems since and can't cope any more without my lovely comp running up to speed!

On advice I tried a Zyxel P600 which hardly connected to the internet so I changed this on advice a Netgear N150 wireless ADSL and this is really intermittent and soooo slow. Plus is says on the box not great on distance and we have 3 floors! Can anyone recommend a good one and where I should look. Thank you SO much for any advice.

I'm not sure why I'm not getting a great connection to be honest - I can only think it is because of distance but then the one in the lounge where the modem is set up is still not fast. I am pretty good with computers but modems is something I have never needed to know about and I have no idea about speed. I will check out the link - thanks.

Maybe you need to change the wireless connection number in your router. Some are preset to 11, but other routers in the area were on that to, hence low speed. I set mine to 4 and all is well. You can download a free program to see what setting is best for you.

Two easy things to check as well..

[1] Connection speed between the Internet and your router - Speed Checker

[2] Connection speed between your router and your PC - Click the wired/wireless icon near the clock.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. The PC and wireless speed is 54.0 and the speed test showed download of 3.35 and upload of 0.82. What can I do with that info? (Sorry to be so thick!)

Will this determine what sort of router I buy? Thanks

Its just the channel number its operating on, if a neighbour is on the same channel interference may occur

Every router will show you the available channel numbers. The manual that comes with it will tell you how to get into the router through your browser. You will see a wireless connection number under one of the tabs, try them all until you find one that suits you. BTW connect to the router with a cable rather than wireless while doing this as I found that some numbers cut off my connection to it until I put the LAN cable in. It is easier if you have two computers, one with the cable and the other on wireless. This way you can test each number without breaking your connection.

I'd still use the software above to determine the best number to choose.
