Advice required from anyone who lives in cardiff or knows the area

I'm going to see u2 at the millenium stadium on the 22nd of august but the nearest hotel i could get a decent price is 20 miles away in pontypool.

What i really need to know is how easy will it be to get from pontypool to the stadium, is there a train station in pontypool and if so how long will it take to get into cardiff, another option would be a taxi but i presume it would be quite expensive.

I'll be driving down to pontypool but will be leaving the car at the hotel.

any advice appreciated

Whooooooaaaaa there Heidi....you have to remember and tip the herder on the way past! :w00t:

By the time you've flaffed about and paid to get from Pontypool and back, it will probably not be that much more to stay closer.

well the difference at the moment is around £90, surely t won't cost that to get into cardiff?

Yeah I would reccommend you cancel your hotel and go to cardiff if possible.. if not then train is a very good option for getting there. The train station is 2minutes away from the millenium stadium so that would be ideal really. The only concern is what time the last train goes back to ponty.. you wouldnt want to cut your gig short now would you!!

You got a hotel £90 cheaper than one in cardiff?? Iv stayed at a hotel in cardiff 6 times now, the most i have paid is £65..

no question, actually stay in Cardiff.

yeah true, but i think all the hotels in cardiff are booked up now by the looks of it, maybe a cab back is the only option

that should give you an idea how close the train station is (click for bigger pic).. id look up on national rail when the last train back is..

Iv stayed in Cardiff for gigs at the stadium before! and the fa cup final

you shoult try etap hotel or ibis or travelodge!

look for hotels in caerphilly which is only a 15 minute train ride from downtown cardiff.trains come every 15 minutes.trains only go thru pontypool once an hour.there is also a premier inn in merthyr tydfil which is very close to the train station.train journey takes approximately 50 minutes.another cheap option are b&b's.hope that helps

as i've said i can't find any in cardiff now that aren't booked up

just checked for you, 10pm is the last train back..

according to google its 36mins by car but it will take you a good 20/25mins to get out of the center after the gig i reckon.. pricey taxi! you might be better off driving into cardiff

what about a b&b

well unless i can find a bed andbreakfast i'm going to have to not bother:-(

there will be loads on newport road and cathedral road!
look on google!

www.tycastellguesthouse.co.uk excellent b&b about a 15 minute train ride from central cardiff

Try googling B&B's in Penarth, it's only 10 minutes by train and about £15 by taxi so you'll be saving even if they work out a little more expensive ;-)

also try googling b&b's in barry, pontypridd, taffs well and caerphilly.

Beware the cost of taxis on that day!!

For the 6 Nations match between Ireland and Wales, cabs in the city centre were not using their meters and charging £40 for journeys that should only have been about £10-£12!! I was told that by a taxi driver who was disgusted by the antics of his fellow drivers!

My advice would be to get the train into Cardiff from Pontypool and get a taxi back as there's no bus/train services back to Pontypool after about 10 (as mentioned previously).

I'd ring a few Pontypool based taxi companies and see what they'll quote you to get back to your hotel (as they'll probably be cheaper than their Cardiff counterparts) to see if this is a feasible option.

I note that there are a few hotels still with availability in Newport which is also another option about the same distance/time away as Pontypool, the last train back to Newport tends to be around 11pm (usually 23:20)(although don't rely on the very last train going in that direction as that one is unreliable in my experience).

Alternatively - as mentioned above - there are loads of B&B's in Cardiff it might be worth trawling yell.com for a space by phone. I'd recommend the ones on Cathedral Road as that would be easy walking distance to the stadium (whereas the ones concentrated on the Newport Rd area would require a bus/extended walk (about 20-30 mins) each way.

Yeah thanks looks like it'll have to be a b&b in cardiff then

Have you found anywhere yet? If not, would you like me to phone round places for you? I live in cardiff. Just need the details if you want some help.

Problem is that those places that have rooms still available want you to book for 2 nights which is the same for any event in cardiff! I phoned the tourist board and they are having the same problem as they are looking for other people. According to them, the larger hotels/chains want £200!!!

I'll keep hunting but it's looking dire! I'm not sure what I am doing in August as my nephew is due then and I am going to scotland to help out otherwise I would put you up.

Call me...have pm'd my number. Got a room booked provisonally outside cardiff.

Here's a question... Is there anywhere I can camp? As it 'pitch a tent' rather than 'mince around' cardiff... ;-)
