Found 29th Mar 2009
The OH has registered to do the London to Brighton bike ride in June. He hasn't done this before therfore needs to purchase a new bike for the "occasion".

His budget for the bike is £450 (ideally a cross between on and off road pursuits)

If anyone also has advice on cycling accessories, this would be appreciated. He needs kitting out from scratch.

Ooohhhh, one more thing... if anyone knows of any goods excersise / training tips please feel free to post.

Many thanks... Rep will be added

Hi i keep posting on these type of threads!! bascially from what you have said a hybrid bikeis what you are looking for, should be able to get a great one for less than 400.

in terms of exercise, by the bike asap and just ride around the roads/countryside - you need time to get used to the bike, especially to get used to the saddle.

Something like this would be great
In terms of accessories, really a backpack would do with a water bottle in it and some food. there are loads of rest stops on the way on teh london to brighton. Also take a puncture repair kit and a small tool kit (ie 1 or 2 spanners and a screwdriver)

Do you have a link please?
We're doing LEJOG & have recently purchased some Boardman Hybrids from Halfords. There are some
2008 models left & are 1/3 cheaper & better than the 2009 models
Sun cream!, and get some hill practise in 'cause Ditchling beacon is a bit of a climb if its not too crowded, also try not to get to carried away on the final run downhill into Brighton as there has been some nasty accidents there before, last one if your going for the mixed style bike maybe change the tyres for full road one's to make life easier,
Oh! and of course the most important one of all for us chaps.....Vaseline your .....well you know where :whistling:
Does his/ your employer particpate in the cycle to work scheme?. I got my bike with about 30% off, and interest free. Comes out of my wage each month. I just went to halfords and they ordered whichever bike i wanted. They didn;t even stock the one i asked for and ordered it in specially.

As stated above - look to get a 2008 model as you will get a third-off or so for essentially the same bike. Camelbaks (and their rip-offs) are good for water - you can get ones which are basically a small rucksack with a 2 or 3L hydration pack in which are well suited to cycling.

If the riding is mostly on-road but he doesn't want a proper road bike, either get a hybrid from the off-set, or another option is a decent hard-tail mountain bike (front suspension only) with suspension which can be 'locked' off for when on road, and a pair smooth hybrid tyres - it'll be a little heavier and slower than a hybrid but for £400 ish you can get a very good lightweight hardtail that will also be excellent off-road.
