Advice wanted on promotions..

Hi All

As you are probably aware we run an online retail business and are always looking at running special offers, promotions, give-aways etc etc.

Obviously, we can only run promotions if it brings an increase in traffic to the website. An increase in business means we can buy stock in bigger quantities which means we get discounts from the wholesalers. The end result is we can either cut prices or give away free gifts.

My question is: What sort of promotion do people generally prefer? What sort of promotion would make you go and look at a website?

Do you prefer discounts, free gifts with a purchase or perhaps money off vouchers for future purchases?

What about discount codes? Perhaps discounts exclusive to "Hotukdeals" members only? What about competitions? If so, what type do you enter?

Any ideas greatfully received!

Personally I think limited stock/time promotions with a big bang are the best, i.e. you give 75% of discount of a product, but it's only 10 of them in stock say, or it's only for 48 hours, etc. Such way you get a look of people coming since they want a good deal (75% off IS a good deal), but you don't loose money as the stock or time is limited.

P.S. And becuase I'm usually within the first few people (or minutes) using such a promotion, I can't complain about getting "Out of stock messages"
