After putting gearbox on car won't go into 2nd or Reverse and Some grinding noise on clutch ...

Had to replace my gearbox and clutch in Toyota Corolla 2002.

Now replaced it won't go into 2nd or Reverse ... been told had the wrong sized gear linkage cable so I got that and waiting for it to be put in by a family member...

... My brother drove it and says won't go in second or reverse and when he drove it, it sounds like the clutch is screeching ...

... we did put a new clutch in and did a full service...

... any ideas if it would definitely sound like gear linkage for not going into gear? Should the replacement solve it. They said needed a longer one ... so went to scrap yard (same one as got the gear box from) and they got a longer one for a toyota corolla.

If this doesn't work then I'll take it to a proper mechanic but wondering if anyone has any ideas why won't go into 2nd or Reverse and also the 'screeching' sound ... is that defo the clutch? Bro says may not have been fitted properly

You mean with the gear box open? ... if that's what you mean then no I don't think so ... I wasn't there but I don't think they did
I think if the gearbox will take other gears but not 2nd or reverse the problem lies within the box and not a cable as other gears can be selected. Is this a used box you fitted?. You may have a problem with syncromesh which is a smaller gear which helps to locate the main gear that you selected.
The synchromesh is knackered.

Yeah it was a used gear box ... I guess I'll take it to a mechanic... my family member does replace taxi parts but first time doing a gear box ... he is one of those that is good at these things but I think it's time to take it to a mechanic:)

Can I just get a second hand or new syncromesh and fit it to the gear box?

I'll see if the new gear box selector cables work. Installing them today. If not then taking it to mechanic and advise them of this syncromesh

try putting the car into first then into reverse it sounds like the the detents of second and reverse are stuck ( this is the mechanism that stops you selecting 2 gears at once). as for noise from clutch did u replace the clutch fork and thrust bearing as if u didnt this could be the cause.

If I put it into First and then Reverse ... then what? Will that fix it? Or what will that show?
if u put it into first then try reverse it it will show if the detents are working if it wont go into reverse after that then my guess would be the the detent system isnt working and wont allow u to shift into gear.
the cable being to shrot is a long shot in my opinion as it would probably fall out of gear in other gears as well. wont be a synchromesh problem with reverse as it does not us syncros
Could be thrust bearing, Clutch misaligned and yes the linkages or even a combination.

So basically it's a botched up job ... needs a pro to look at it

It does still drive in first, third and fourth. But my bro says it's making a screeching sound which sounds like the clutch.

I guess the clutch is misaligned and other things. Anyone have any idea how much a mechanic would charge to look at it and fix a job like this?

LOL ... so thinking of this lol.

So frustrating!
just let a real qualified mechanic have a look over it and if he can't find anything then off to a gearbox specialist or refurbishment company it will go?
