He has not been the best captain we have had I grant you but he has done sterling service
won two ashes series and in India/South Africa

Always thought he was a bit of a reluctant captain. Not a natural but the obvious choice after Strauss.

A touch on the cautious side but cant argue with his Ashes triumphs.

Critics might not remember the dross served up under Stewart/Atherton et all during the 90s!

Hope he smashes Tendulkar's test runs record cos no one else will ever get close

Can't argue with that he could go on for another decade ? !
the only worry is test cricket may not exist by then

I hope its still around. I don't really like these 2 month long T20 tournaments like IPL. Fine for Indian audiences but not for me. Tests any day

I liked him but he got caught in too much of the politics with KP and others and his form suffered.
One of the best England openers but he should have given the captaincy a long time ago
and just concentrate on his game.

But like most Captains, only goes after England got beat heavily.

Well not likely to step down when we are winning ?
also not really fair on the new guy to have there first tour in charge somewhere like India
maybe a year ago would have been better but remember he had just won the ashes for the second time

At the end of the day much better to go now after a short period of reflection
and let Root(or whoever) have 6 months to 'prepare'

any way here is his record in full

He's been a good captain but lacking somewhat as well, not consistent. I've always thought he's struggled with captaincy and being opening bat as well. I would have liked him to stay captain and move himself down the order a bit, maybe 3 or 4. It might have taken a bit of pressure off. It'll be interesting to see if he keeps his opening bat position now he's not captain. If he does I expect less inconsistency out of him.

He knew his days were numbered after the Bangladesh series. I like him but its sad he got caught
in too much politics. Hopefully can go on and be free now. Although the way England team works, he will
probably have more influence than the Captain.

Yes being an ex-captain is a tricky act to pull off (just look at M.S Dhoni )but I think he can
Cook hasn't really told his side of the KP saga but KP behaved like such an idiot afterwards that it was never really an issue for me
    Graham Norton put it well
“I want to put this nicely,” he said to Pietersen, “but reading the book, it strikes me that maybe, just maybe, team sport’s not for you?”

The politics were mostly KPs doing. And his classless post on Twitter today sum him up whilst others have recognised his contributions.

Don't really see that either he has always been an opener
and has just been looking so jaded we have lost our last three captains to soon due to tiredness/depression

Cook looks a little knackered fed up
Strauss,Vaughan and Hussain have all quoted some sort of depression/tiredness as their reason for quitting playing when they stepped down from the captaincy

That was my point, maybe the stress of being captain and opening bat was a bit too much.
And all the added crap from the so called media experts of course. We live in an age where expectations outstrip reality.

All those 3 were right at the end of their careers when they stepped down as captain.

Cook has another 3-4 years minimum. I'm sure he'll want to emulate his mentor Goochie who played into his 40s.
