    Alienware M17xR3 repair

    Hi
my son has an M17xR3 with a 2 GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M graphics card. Recently when the laptop is under load the screen goes black but the laptop appears to be working. After a period of cooling down the laptop works again. After a quick search on the net it looks like the graphics card might be the culprit. If that is the case, is it possible to replace the NVIDIA item with something more reliable? Cheaper?
    Thanks in advance.

might need a clean if you havent done so, build of of dust and dirt could be causing overheating

Yes likely needs a clean and replace the thermal paste on where the GPU connects to the heat pipe assembally. The 5 series GPUs run pretty hot anyway. Pretty easy job to do for a computer repair shop.

OK, thanks for that. There is a video on youtube showing how to do it. Is there any way to prove that is the problem or is it a case of trial and error?

While you can never say for sure from what you have said this is the most logical thing to do. Thermal compound (especially the cheap stock stuff that it comes with) only has a certain amount of heat cycles before it starts to dry out. When it stops filling the gaps it's can't transfer the heat as efficiently to the heat pipes so the thermal cut out on the GPU is activated.

If you are doing it you may as well do the CPU thermal compound too.

Well, it's a cheap fix, so I'll give it a go.

Anyone know if an alternative graphics card is available for this Laptop?

in my opinion the GPU is on the last legs and needs replacing.
cost £90 plus BGA chipset cost.

If this fails to solve it then looking for a replacement card is an option. MXM GTX580m cards are generally thin on the ground here in the UK. You may have some luck with the 560 varient which are more readily available on the used market and more affordable but with the associated depleted performance.
Be warned. If it all goes to plan it will be pretty simple. If not you will be pulling your hair out (speaking from experience).

    Good luck.
