both cars listed would cost you about 2k per year to insure

golf gti
Corsa
Fiesta
VW Polo

so nearly 17 want to buy a car and you main priority is that its fast?! tell me where you live so i can stay well away from you on the road!

Why does it need to be fast?

17 year olds are the worst drivers on the road

yes, when you have about 10 years experience behind a wheel.

Get the bus. Enough youngsters die on the roads as it is.

one of my friends has a 900CC yet it still manages to go over 90mph its not the car really its who is driving it ;-)

Have just bought my 17 yr old niece a Fiat Punto 1.2 on a Y plate and that cost her £1500 on insurance, so you should forget about a car with a bigger engine or more sporty. Get comfortable driving on your own properly first.

Thats the same as my nieces car (hers is red with black fluffy dice.....don't ask lol), recommended by a mechanic friend as they are really reliable, cheap on parts and economical.

I would play it save get a 1 or 1.2 and build up your insurance. After all the models you have mentioned are not particually fast anyway and most old timers (36 AAAARRRRGHGHH) like myself would be able to blow you away in our standard Mondeo.

Maybe do an advanced driving test, it might help bring your insurance down!

Are you a Mondeo man :-D

What about a Clio, Nissan Note, Suzuki Swift, VW Polo, Skoda Fabia, Subaru Justy, Toyota Yaris, Mazda 2, Citreon C3 or C2, Honda Jazz?

Just throwing a couple of other cars into the debate!

I was but now have a Laguna 2.0 Turbo. Quick enough for me. My history is very chequered on cars. Have had Skoda Estelle(lets have the jokes and i can confirm it WAS a bag of spanners),2 metros,2 excort vans,3 mondeos,3 lagunas,1 astra and a skoda octavia.

A couple of friends have had problems with the electrics on the SXi, both brought them 2nd hand and within the first 6 months they had to pay to sort problems out. Not sure if this is a common thing or not.

Agreed, after your test you should do Pass Pluss, some local authorities will even help pay for it. It gives Insurance discounts

The whole reason why your insurance will be so high, i havent read all the thread, but know if youre 17 and looking for a fast car you'll pay a fortune in insurance and rightly so

Had a P plate std 1.6 polo - was great at lights cos it looked like 1.0 on the back and ppl kept trying to whizz in front of me

Don't get a "fast car" as a priority, you want something slow (well reasonable power), a car where parts are cheap to replace and something that isn't a tin box. (ie coffin on wheels).

Anyone will tell you that most of your learning is done after your driving test, stay out of trouble (ie points or crashes) and in say 5 years (in which you can save) you'll get cheap insurance on most cars.

Also get a good handling car, straight line speed (ie 0-60 times) mean nothing.
